Newb question about polygon count >.<

I'm working on some models for one of my projects and have a question.

I'm sure you've all heard this questions a thousand times. But I had no luck with searching.

With a target audience of pc gamers, How many polys should I aim for, for things like weapons, buildings, or total on screen?

I know the fewer the better but it would be nice to have a range from others more experienced than myself.

One good thing to do is check the UDK's assets to see the poly count for those that are similar to what you are trying to make and try to work with that into consideration, like 4 or 5k for a gun or around 10-15k for a character. Also take into consideration the quality of the materials you will be using on the model, some people have lower poly models but have very high quality or complex materials and others may opt for higher poly models that have lower quality materials.

depends on what spec's your aiming at

but if you have limits try aiming 12,000 polys for things like characters, weapons, vehicles, etc.....
