    I aid in a design class for UDK and I guarantee this is the #1 Lighting problem. I've only ever caught one person figuring it out on their own lol.

    I guess that you use a dominant directional light in your level. Be aware that you dome WILL cast shadows and will accept light. You should go in the proprieties of you dome, under static mesh actor, lighting and turn off: accepts dynamic dominant light shadows, accepts dynamic lights, and cast shadow. That should solve you problem.

    On completion of my terrain i imported a static sky dome mesh from udk3 into my map as i positiond it over my terrain it went dark so i tryed rebuilding the lighting and bam it crashed udk i have version 2010_01 ... could someone please explain why this might have happened...cheers
