Is there any reason why you wouldn't want to store them together or add additional folders so you had something like this:

    art assets
    characters
    team 1
    jack
    jack.max
    jack.ase
    jack.psd
    jack.upk
    team 2
    effects
    environments

I'm asking because this has the potential to become a huge project that will require rigid asset manangement. In past games this was the process used.

Heres the way I do it

Root Project file (the map name or mod whatever)
WIP (work in progress folder, which contains all my 3d studio max files)
ASE (Finished exported ASE files ready to go into UDK)
    Textures>WIP>Finished

Using Libraries is the way to go imo, if you're running Windows 7 that is.

    art asset storage

I'm trying to get an idea of best storage practices with regard to raw art assets. Are files like .max and .psd stored in the folders with the packages or is it better to keep a separated set of folders for raw assets?

In my past projects not using Unreal all raw assets and in-game files are always stored together.

I'm very new to this so please excuse my ignorance.
