  • character creation?

Is there any way to make a character or gun or animal or something by just using udk and not having any other modeling software? that's really disapointing if there isn't.

Use XSI Mod Tool - Free and tools exist.

    Free for non-commercial

      I don't think that's what he's asking.

Unreal was never a character creation package or even a modeler. Whatever modeling functionality it has is level related, meant to help you construct environments. I don't see what's so disappointing about this considering all the tools it comes with. It's a game engine and the tools it comes with revolve around that fact, just like every other game engine. With free software available and plugins to do what you want, and get them into UDK, I don't see what the problem is.

Which Modeling Program is better with UDK, Blender or this XSI Mod Tool? Also, which is more user friendly to beginners.

I would go with the mod tool. UDK includes plugins for importing/exporting models for a bunch of modeling programs, including the mod tool.

I second what Quanta says. I have tried Blender and it just confuses me (even with 3d studio max knowledge). XSI is much more user friendly IMO.

I've been looking into the Mod Tool Program, but all I can find is the free 30 day trial version. Is there somewhere else I need to look to find the free version for non-commercial use?(I don't plan on selling or distributing what I'm working on with the UDK)

Autodesk's website is pretty terrible to find anything on.

This is the page for Modtool 7.5

Don't get me wrong, but...have you ever worked with a game engine before? A game engine doesn't provide you with advanced modeling tools - it basically renders existing models (which have been created in a modeling package), plays sfx/music, processes user input etc. You'll always need a 3d modeling package in order to get any kind of 3d model into your game.
A game engine is not a modeling package. The usual workflow as I know it is to do some concept art/sketches, create a model in a 3d modeling package (Maya, 3ds Max, Softimage or whatever package you choose), texture the model (and maybe rig/animate it), export it and then import it to the engine. Then you setup the imported model to work with the engine (assign materials to it etc.).

Disappointing? Why? Cuz you don't understand how this works?

It'd be like saying if the oven in your house will make a pizza for you....NO. it will cook it, you still have to make it though....and you being disappointed because it wont make pizza from scratch.

And just like my pizza+oven metaphor...you can buy a pizza pre-made and just cook it in the oven...well, there's sites you can buy pre-made models and whatnot and throw them in UDK.

Do a bit more research before coming on the forums and saying that the lack of a feature that's been nonexistent in UTE3/UDK or any game engine that I'm aware off for the past kazillion years, disappoints you.

It's more like saying if the oven in your house will vacuum your living room for you.

Hi guys, my first post here!

I'm sure you get this a lot here, but is there a complete tutorial that explains how to create a character, how to add it to UDK, and how you can actually use it in your game?
Also it would be helpful to have information including "setups" for the character that allows you to choose walking speed, and different key bindings for example, holding sift to run.

Well actually I'm sure I could find tutorials for character creation, but it would be good to know if there is something specific I would need to know while modelling.
It's very difficult to look and follow so many different threads, it just seems too hard that way.

Maybe someone could point me to the right direction, or maybe list the things I must do to accomplish my goal. I'm sure that other new users would love this information too to get started right!

Thank you for your help already! =)

I love the fact that we have to use a 3d application such Max or Maya just for naming some.

It's a bit sad to see a newbie treated like crap for asking a basic question. I don't think there's a need to be so rude. Ignorance and disappointment are hardly crimes.

Game engines do tend to market themselves as everything you need to make amazing games which almost always leads to confusion. I see it all the time. Just look at the text on the front page:

"All the tools you need to create great games, advanced visualizations and detailed 3D simulations. The best tools in the industry are in your hands."

All the tools I need? Fantastic!
