    WIP - UPong

In the summer of 1998, a group called Team Reaction made a mod for Quake 2 called QPong. It was a fun FPS soccer type mod that was great for LAN parties and was selected as the grand prize winner of the PC Gamer Quake II mod contest shortly after its release. As a die-hard fan of the mod, I've begun work to recreate it so that this generation of gamers can enjoy the game. If you have Quake 2, (or are just curious where I'm drawing my inspiration from) the original mod files can still be found here: http://qpong.hypexr.org/

The best way of describing it is FPS soccer (or football for those outside of the the US). There are goals at either end of the map, and your team earns points by scoring into your opponent's goal. It's a rough alpha at this point, but it should be playable. I have a design doc I'm constantly updating when I think of new things to add, but if you have any feedback or suggestions, please let me know!

Here's a my progress videos showing off the stuff I've been adding to the game (in order by date):

    Changelog:
    • 0.1: Initial release of game.
    • 0.11: Changed instructions to tell players how to change their name if they don't use Steam. Fixed pause menu buttons so hitting Exit will actually quit the game instead of reloading into single player.

Small update today that fixes a bug a few people have mentioned to me. I've been spending most of my free time with the girlfriend so I haven't been working on this as much (plus adding a spectator mode is a bigger PITA than originally thought; http://forums.epicgames.com/threads/...Spectator-mode), but I'm hoping to have the base weapons absorbed into the codebase and archetyped this week. In the short run it'll let me take the Link Gun's power booster out.

Looks like a cool project, but I think slinging the ball around in isolation might get a bit repetitive, might be nice to add 'goals' where you build moment and ramp it up into a pit or try and hit certain obstacles along the way.

This isn't meant to be a single player game, so it really won't be much fun if you're playing it alone. :-)

The best way of describing it is FPS soccer (or football for those outside of the the US). There are goals at either end of the map, and your team earns points by scoring into your opponent's goal. After I get all the base systems for the game in place I'll start making more complicated levels.

Just as a preview, my friend and I were tossing around the idea of making a space themed level - the balls would be different planets, the gravity would be lower for everyone, etc. We'd also had an idea of a medieval level that would involve pit traps, trap doors, possibly drawbridges and other things of that nature.

Got another video up! I've been working hard on getting the weapons system set up how I want it - the ammo pickup stuff is almost ready, but the weapons will need plenty of work still. Hopefully the weapon locker code won't be that bad, and then I can move on to more fun things. XD

Alright, got the weapons system done including some new code that will let me use custom skins on each weapon (mostly so I can be lazy and multipurpose the weapon models). I'm learning Flash right now so redo some menus and the HUD, and once I get that all in place I'll get a new release up.

                Hi Dainslaif,
I installed the game and when I launch the client.bat after server.bat I join the game and it a message comes up "You are on Red" with sound.
The HUD is all there and works perfectly but other than that I just see black.
Ive got a feeling it may not be 64-bit compatible but just wondered if you have had this problem in the past.

                thanks!

I've never tried running it in 64 bit, only in 32, so it's very possible it doesn't work in 64-bit. I believe I included batch files in the zip that should start the client and server stuff for you, although it will be in 32 bit. :-)
