    My Weekend Alone (with UDK)

So a long time ago I became familiar with UDK but wasn't so keen on the finer points of some of the tools (such as Kismet, Matinee and the Material Editor).

My wife went out of town for the weekend and I chose that time to do my own little "game jam" session. I mocked up some images and some flow lines and set out to make a tech demo before she got home. Sadly I only got halfway through the project before calling it curtains, but I learned a ton in the process.

Oh and I forced myself to use only assets that came stock with UDK. More on that later...

Here's my results (I did this many months ago, just never got around to posting):

So the idea started in MS Paint, like all great 48 hour projects start:

Then I started blocking out the level a bit more:

Then I started adding some of the larger vegetation to find where I could hide key elements of the demo as well as bring a bit more structured life to the area:

After that I started replacing some of the rock boundary with actual buildings:

Then I went into the matinee editor and decided to make some things move (each thin red bar is an animation sequence):

And here's the animation arcs for each element:

And then finally, I recorded myself walking through and it put it on youtube. The quality of my recording (and my recording skills in general) suck, so bear with me:

Watching it in 720 is infinitely better.

Also, I just wanted to note something interesting that I wasn't expecting when I constrained myself to only stock UDK assets. I had all the obvious 3D assets, which was great, but the sounds were incredibly limited. I ended up using Bio Rifle sounds and mixed them with vehicle crashing/blowing up sounds to create the audio for the rock falling sequence. I definitely had to "get creative" to get those to sound right!

I spent a majority of my time painting materials onto the assets and in matinee itself trying to be mr. awesome director, and it ate away at my weekend. That's ultimately what contributed to me only getting about 50% of the project complete.

OH and in the video, the process was SUPPOSED TO be that you picked up the red idol and placed it into the "sun" slot, then went to grab the blue idol (not shown) and place it in the "rain" slot, then the statue would slide out of the way, revealing another building with a cave system leading down. I was going to end it at the base of the descent into the cave and not flesh the cave out at all.
