    [WIP] Arenas

For starters let me say hi to everyone here!
I just started to mess around with UDK and it's my first try at working with these kinds of programs, I have a basic knowledge of c++, html, php, java, photoshop and in the future going to try and learn to work with 3D modelling. I already did a few personal websites, but sadly either forgot to make backups or save them for my portfolio, or lost them in a hard drive crash I had a couple years back ...

Well anyway getting back to the topic, I'm trying to do something like a gladiator arena (might go forward with it and make it playable) and wanted opinions on what I have done so far.
Everything you see here was done using assets already available on the editor.

    Caved Ruins - DAY 2
Well I have finished another area, this time it was the Ruins.

Sadly I forgot to take some screenshots, so those will come in later.
I have finally added the river (though the reflection looks kinda bad, gotta fix that at a later time), a cave at one end and a passage to “other” areas if I ever do them.
When I’m able to work with the camera function on UDK (haven’t tried it yet) I’ll make some videos of all the areas I’ve done and add them at some other time.

    Lab - DAY 1 & 2
Here we go with another area that I have started and already "finished" it.
"Finished" it because it still is lacking something that I wanted to add but cant right now. Some huge computer to control the portal on the middle.

About the area itself I wasn't going to add the portal itself, but when I was looking with what to fill the platform in the middle I suddenly see this mesh "MegaRing".
When I added it to the world map I was "wth there's nothing here", but then I moved the camera back I was "woahhh" never noticed such a huge and awesome mesh. It was then that I knew I should somehow add it to the lab

    Well here are some screenshots:

Two screenshots with the main lights off, so that you can see the environment better.

Any kind of opinion is welcome, just don't forget that I never had any kind of experience with game engines.

Pretty nice update there BoneCraKeR! Looks like your getting used to the UDK pretty quickly!

I wish my first attempt was as good as this! Promising stuff! Keep working hard at it!

Great job for your first time! Just a tip though, use as many static mesh objects as you can for detail and lighting, and uses BSP brushes for basic walls. Also, work on the layout of your map first, then pour on the details. At least I find that this way works best for me. Feel free to find your own way about it!

Also, for scaling, in the more recent versions of UDK (everything past march 2011 I think) you can press the "\" key to bring up a shape the standard size of your player. You can customize it to any mesh but I don't know how. (if anyone could help me with this?)

Thanks to both of you, adding an update to it.
I really don't know what to add to the exterior part of the arena =(, well with all the meshes I have available on UDK I don't think any fit with the theme lol

@emraldis I already thought about the layout before starting to work on it but sadly I kept getting new ideas or changing stuff xD
Also I already have some more ideas for other areas (added some pics with a really basic idea for them).
Tried the "\" key and it showed a square with the size of the player, but didn't find a way to change the size of it. Thanks for this going to be really useful

Can someone tell me, if I wanted to create a terrain with different heights, like a place to put a river, should I use the brushes, create a mesh and then import it or something different?
Another thing is, I changed the size of the gate and now whenever it opens it just disappears half way down and doesn't show up again. I tried to redo the matinee but still didn't work, anyone knows what might be the problem?

              Added a new update, Day 4 & 5 and a new area.

What I had doubts now is, what's the best way to make the river?
I thought of using subtractive brushes and then add some meshes so that it doesn't have a straight hole where the river runs, but I think there might be better ways to do it.

Here I am again with another update.
I probably should stop with making new areas and focus on how to actually make a game to work. To finally start the reason why I started to mess around with UDK ^^'

I have finished another area, this time it was the Ruins. Sadly I forgot to take some screenshots, so those will come in later.
And here we go with another area that I have started and already "finished" it.

Wanted to start working on the 3D modelling using blender but I cant right now as my keyboard hasn't had a working SHIFT key for more than a year now.... and most commands on blender are based on it.
I'll just have to delay it a little till I buy a new one in the next couple of weeks.
