    Toon

    I started a level tonight that I'll be using for my portfolio and to get the hang of the more complex parts of level design.

    Story: You play as the character of a side 2.5D side scroller. Let me make it clear that this is not a 2.5D game, but that you play as the character of said game.

    I'm gunna stick with the colors, though the meshes need some work.

    Here's the map so far. I'm probably just going to work on the meshes for a while.

    DEMO

    Just put the map in your Maps folder, and the package in Content.

    There's a slight issue with the miniboss, in that if you die he tends to jump off the side of the map. which in turn makes it impossible for you to complete the level.

          Just run to the end of the level to beat it, make sure to kill the guy with the rocket launcher.

                  I had a chance to run through this today.

                  Seems like the camera should be in side-scroller mode instead of first person on your first release since that's what kind of level this is.

                  Collision could be simplified. Lots of places to get stuck.

                  If you die after the jump boots section, you can't go past it again.

                  For some reason, when I got to the rocket area, "Monster Kill!" sound kept looping.

                  I like the guy appearing behind the rock that rolled out of the way.

                    It's a joke, you play as the character of a 2.5D game, apparently it isn't a very good joke.

                    This will be addressed in the 0.4 build, it's only supposed to play after you kill all the enemies.

                    I had to come up with a way of having him be hidden at spawn, you can see him form anywhere on the map without the rock there.


                    Alpha 0.3 This one addresses the issue of dying, and having the map end.

                      Not sure anyone will get the 2d in a 3d world gag. It's pulled off very well in some of the Paper Mario levels. In this case it may come across as lazy design since nothing is happening in the 3d space of the playable area, and there's a whole side of the level that's empty space.

                      Should probably start thinking about max draw distance since the level is one long hall, the user sees everything all the time. Even in early stages this is important for testing performance.

                      All the bots in the rocket area kill each other before I get to them.

                        I'll probably switch it to 2.5D or into an actual 3D game sooner or later. I want to get a custom menu in place first.

                        I have no idea how to make bots on the same team actually be on the same team. They're all blue and they all attack the player so the team is there, but only when there's also a player near them.

                        On a different note, I won't be home to work on this for the next week. When I do get back I'll make some progress but probably wont post anew alpha until I decide what to do with the level.

                          I've made some changes to the art style, and I'm going to to go ahead and proceed with this as a standard FPS alibi with plenty of black humor. I'll post so screen shots tomorrow for now here's the newest build.

                          Build 0.4

                          Still no custom menus or UI and I just updated to the July build and there may be some unforeseen bugs. I'm aware that the Uv's on all the meshes suck the meat and I'm going to fix them as soon as I can.

                            This build is a blank screen showing only the default unreal material (checker). Looks like missing material for some UI. Anyway, can't do anything or play the build.

                              And here in-lies the importance of testing. Guess I'll have to mess with it and figure out what I did wrong.
