In Verbis Virtus (demo available for download)

    In Verbis Virtus
    [SHOT]http://www.indomitusgames.com/images/ivv.jpg[/SHOT]
    Developer: Indomitus Games
    Genre: Action/Puzzle
    Release date: TBD

In Verbis Virtus is a first person view video game that mixes action and puzzle elements in a fantasy setting, in the game you play as a wizard who can perform spells pronouncing magic formulas. The innovation introduced by this game is in the control system: the player must use a microphone to cast spells by actually saying the magic words.

While playing In Verbis Virtus we find ourselves completely unarmed in a dark dungeon that hides many dangers. The only way to overcome the obstacles that you'll find is to learn the secrets of the arcane arts of magic through books that the protagonist finds along his path. These tomes teach magic formulas which, if pronounced correctly, enable you to perform many spells. Using these powers in a creative way the player can solve puzzles, overcome traps and kill the enemies that try to hinder him.

    Ignus Solus!
That sounds like a great idea, how far along are you with the speech recognition, is that technology even up to something like this?

Either way, I wish you good luck

The speech recognition is at a very good point. The major issues we have are compatibility issues with microphones (particularly notebook integrated microphones) and in some case with audio cards.
      Thanks!

                  Level design - excellent.
                  Puzzles - good.
Idea - unique, but sound based gameplay could be more successful in iOS or consoles, rather than PC.
Improvements: cast delay is too long, lines should be shorter (1 word each), needs a solution to work well with bad english, puzzles need more hints/help.
It really needs to be a short game or there needs to be an alternative, because the voice casting will get tedious eventually and the playability will be situational (can't play at nights or evenings when your kid/wife/family is sleeping for instance etc.
I didn't play further than after moving the 2 pillars from the door, because I spent like 30 minutes only on trying to get spells to function properly together with my low sound mic and bad english and after having trouble with using the 4th spell properly I got frustrated.

But man, I love the detail in level design, don't really see such quality and originality in indies.

                    Thanks!
The game will not be very long, but the voice will be used for all it's duration. In the journal if you click on the formulas you can hear the right pronounciation, you don't need to be native to pronounce well enough. I'm italian, never spoke english outside academic context and never gone in an english speaking country. Anyway we will probably switch to an invented language. Have you tried setting your mic volume differently? You can have problems also if it is too high, not only if it is too low. In fact with a normal desktop microphone like mine (paid 9,9€) the recognition works well also if i talk in a low voice. This resolves also the "family sleeping problem" if you have at least a door separating from them.

Hi, I took care of the graphic part of the game, and first of all I want to thank you for your reply and advices ^^ Anyway, some of the points you speak of are not that easy to solve. Spells' formulas have to be at least two words long at this time, or something in the recognition may go wrong. Thus to make sure that everyone would be able to play, we put in the spell tome (J key) a blue hyperlink that let you hear how the magic should be pronunced. By the way, we're thinking to switch to an imaginary language for the formulas.

Edit: didn't notice that mux replied before me, my bad ^^"

Very good stuff. Love the idea behind gameplay. Keep it up to a release guys.
We're using a similar concept when it comes to gameplay for our own project by the way(no voice recg. thought).
