    There's no secrets. Just basic stuff. How to split static mesh depends on what it is. We may assign 4 materials to each of the foreground buildings. Primary wall (brick), secondary wall, window frames, and glass. And those 4 materials will be used on all the buildings with same scheme. It's more efficient than creating separate texture for each buildings. For something like doors, if it's repeated, we'll create one and duplicate it in UDK. Same with things like tables and chairs. Background buildings however have their own textures as they don't use same material scheme. Everything's merged into one texture and one UV. So how you break them up will depend on your scene.
