Default A side note on how to play KOTH.

I recently played a match where there was only me and one other person trying to break the ring and capture. 3 people on our team were lancering from the background farming kills. I'd like to say this helps, but in KOTH it doesn't. If you do this, you may think it helps, tbh it doesn't. The point of KOTH is to break the ring and capture it. Just bums me out when I get 2+ people that go through 2 rounds without a break or a capture. This is a growing trend and they are experts at stealing downed kills. On a positive note, I'm only 20 matches away from getting Prescott.

I do miss annex. Less than 20 matches of KOTH to get Prescott. Then I can go back to execution.

Wingman was a super pain! I flew through it during the Valentine event. There was no camping, no power weapons, etc. and that eliminated camping. If they have another wingman event I would take advantage

I had a game earlier today where someone on the other team was camping on top of Sandbar with a retro lancer the entire game...

Anyway, these days it seems that you have to party up if you want decent teammates.

Sorry but I'm one of those guys when I'm drunk. I have to or else I get sawed off from behind constantly.

But I'm usually using the lancer which I'm decent at and I get tons of kills/downs(don't steal). Seems like it helps because I focus on the ring and full red people so it's easier for my team to push when needed. *shrug* On defense i down people before they get to the ring. But yea drunken strategy because I'm far too careless then, and I have to camp it out. Doesn't happen that often.

Yup, one Lancer sometimes helps, but most of the team members should be trying to capture the hill. I also hate it when they try to be a hero with the Sniper (as a youtube guy put it). I mean, unless you get 8 kills with it it's not going to help that much, and to be honest most of the people who pick it up do not get a single kill with it, they just try to get no-scopes -_- Heck, I've seen people camping at the OneShot spawn instead of helping us capture the damn ring -_-

when you get in a good group however I reckon KOTH has the potential to be my fave game mode. I guess the answer is is if you can find a group of like minded folk then friend request them. Look at it this way, as someone who is not that good at the game, I give myself a 1 in 3 chance at best - probably worse in a single 1 on 1 with a human player with the gnasher, BUT in KOTH I always give it my best to play properly.

this means that it is a game mode i can sometimes do ok on against "better" players, becasue all it needs is a few average guys to play it properly, and sure my KD ratio may suck, but I normally snag my fair share of wins.

the same can also be true of CTL.

There is a method to the madness of keeping the enemy waiting to re-spawn, but from what you regale us with it sounds like no these were just douche-nozzles. I've played against teams that know how to press a number advantage by keeping your teammates in respawn. Oddly it was one of the more interesting games I played even though we got savaged in the end (More because my team-mates that weren't my best friend didn't understand the meaning of the word support, and two people can only do so much against odds like that). I like playing against a team that knows how to use tactics effectively. Because even if I lose I learn something from it.

I'm all for covering the ring with long ranged fire. But for feth's sake MOVE UP TO HELP ME CAP ONCE ITS CLEARED DAMMIT. I'm fine with leaving a 1-2 people back to keep covering, but the whole team doesn't need to. Or even worse stop covering me while I'm capping and the enemy are breathing down my neck just because you want the cap points. One or the other. Be consistent. Argh!

What I am trying to say is, I know that feel OP. I know that feel all to well. Hug?

yeah on Saturday i was enjoying a really great koth match on Sandbar. me and 2 guys plus two bots vs a full team. and we were a round up and winning the next round.

then two people joined and one of them decided to pick up sniper and stay in that little passage and snipe for the rest of the match. no matter where the ring was, the guy would be stood in that passage with his sniper.

    we lost the match.

There's definately a fine balance here, a couple well placed rifle masters can sway the tide of a battle, I know me and another guy posted up on Anvil defending a circle from a far that had only 2 seconds remaining until the other team had victory. Our bangers got in there and combined after several respawns from both teams while we were on top we scored the victory.

But obviously OP I get that you are saying that some people don't identify the right moments to provide surpressing fire. Because I don't play in teams when it comes to MP, like a chameleon I usually identify what my team doesn't have (a rusher, weapons specialist or a surpressor) and take on that roll. Luckily I'm not into stats because breaking that ring constantly on your own without any backup is unrewarding to your k/d but I'll play any position for the win.

I lancer a lot when my Gnasher is shooting bubbles at people. But I'm not off the opposite side of the map trying to farm kills, normally lancering the ring and trying to help team mates kill those near it and then capping/breaking when it is possible to do so.

KOTH is most fun with a group of friends that actually go for the ring. KOTH is half-decent if I join a quick match with at least 2 friends since we communicate with each other and coordinate attacks. It gets old real quick when you are trying to break the ring yourself and die in a hail of rifle fire.

It also annoys me to see people just waiting around for power weapons and grenades. People need to pay more attention to the game notifications to see what has been picked up and what people have been killed with recently.

I played Ranked the other day..... It was like..... 1-2 vs 5.... One guy kept camping and planting nades in nade room on Mercy..... I was just 1 lone win away from getting my w/l to 1.0 (I don't have the luxury of having teammates on all the time). So, yeah, I feel the pain.

Just do what I do when that was happening to me the other day I just went and hunted them down where they were camping and then it made them come after me while trying to break or hold the ring. Cheap players sometimes all they want to do is shoot you in the back or from a far distance. What do you want to bet that they are yellow and cowards in real life since that is how they play the game. I usually don't speak like this but sometimes you have to vent.

It is frustrating when you have teammates that never go for the ring and don't do much to help the team. I usually spend most of my time at or near the ring and I regularly finish matches with the most caps and most kills. Having a couple people set up to rifle incoming enemies is good, but people that just sit in one spot the whole time don't really help much.

When I run KOTH we run 2 lancers, for the smiple fact it help us get closer with gnasher or keep them busy so we can come around the otherside, if we get the kills we get them, but the point is to draw there fire so other team mates and get in there and clean house if they have trouble we move in and help out.

I have almost 5000 caps and almost 1500 breaks. I play objective no matter what. And if you are on the winning team playing objective, even if you are the only decent player, you will still get quite a few kills. If the game type is played right, the other team will rush the hill, break it and you get another cap if you're smart. Most maps don't make sense to use a rifle exclusively and i can't think of many that have rifle lanes, making it impossible to flank a camper. Blood drive, gridlock, yeah. If someone gets in the right spot it takes a concerted team effort to uproot them.

I don't play those campy matches often. I got one on blood drive and i'm like "ok i see where people are coming from when they say this map is a camp fest". KOTH is where i've gotten over 9000 gnasher kills. I guess it takes a certain type of player/mind set to play a gametype like this? That'd be my best guess

It's a common misconception that you need the entire team capturing and breaking. This isn't true at most you need is 2, the other 3 are to kill them enemies to stop them from getting to the ring(other roles of the 3 players covered later, also the ratio may change depending on your opponents strategy). You may see it as pointless killing, but it prevents the enemy from getting captures(Enemy unable to capture = your team winning). Having an offensive AND defensive team will help you win the game. Of course players can switch roles depending on the situation and what's needed to handle the situation. If you watch videos of pros playing you'll see each player has a designated role, and it's not just 5 people running into the circle. You need players to secure key areas including the high ground as well as securing the power weapons. If all 5 go to the ring each time, that means the other team will have the high ground(if any) and the power weapons. It's also generally useful to have a player stand in the spawn near the ring to prevent the enemy team from getting the short spawn.

If all 5 go to the ring each time, that means the other team will have the high ground(if any) and the power weapons. It's also generally useful to have a player stand in the spawn near the ring to prevent the enemy team from getting the short spawn.
All of that is true. However, I think what the OP is mainly referring to is the players that spend precious time chasing around one guy, or focusing too much time camping on power weapons or nades (getting them, fine. Waiting around for them to spawn again when you don't know if someone already has them, not fine).

When the entire enemy team is near the ring and only one or two from your team are there to fight them off, something is wrong. Support is fine......if it is being conducted in an efficient way. Chasing around one guy for 10 minutes while the other 4 make it safely to the ring is definitely not helping the team.

Also, the strategies you mention are only effective if your team already holds the ring or the enemy team has yet to make it there. If they hold the ring, and nobody has a shot on the people defending it, they need to push the ring and not just sit back waiting for someone to stick their head out.

One of the reasons I won't play KOTH, even with most of my friends.

I was feeling extremely bored one morning, so I joined a game and targeted one other player the entire game.

Executed him like 7 times and the last execution cost me the game, but it didn't bother me.

So many people just go for kills, they don't even try for the ring! I've had fantastic teams, where we all rush the ring, then when 10 seconds is left we just go to the next one. I've had horrible teams where they just try get kills. I swear kills should be 10 points or not even count... But I really like KOTH so I deal with it.

I had a feeling someone would make your last point which is why I mention the ratio can change depending on the enemy teams strategy. I was also taking into account if the enemy team has the ring, you can send more to the ring while 1 or 2 collect power weapons(if available) and push the ring. Or if the enemy team has a strong offensive you can change how many players you need for each role. It depends on the situation and what is needed to handle the situation. A lot of what I wrote was advice on how to co-ordinate winning strategies, they aren't a divine doctrine on how you will win each game. You and your team need be able to adapt based on the situation, that's the key to success for the game mode. I just don't want people think everyone needs to be at the ring, you get that a lot and when you lose area and power weapon control the other team will take advantage and systematically wipe you out and take the ring.
Big thanks to Thrashballer for helping me finish my gun prop set, much appreciated .

Trust me, we are in complete agreement. Since you specifically mentioned that there is a misconception about the entire team needing to cap, I just wanted to further explain where I believed the OP's intentions to be with the creation of this thread. And that is to highlight the exact things we are talking about now. Other folks who play but don't get it should either heed the advice of this thread or just go back to TDM and leave the objective games for objective-minded people.
