    Default 'GenerateUV's failed, couldn't convert to a D3DXMesh'

Whenever I try and generate unique UV's on my mesh it fails saying 'GenerateUV's failed, couldn't convert to a D3DXMesh'. It does this for any mesh, even a simple box! Also does the same when I try and slice fractured meshes and also does the same for Unreal's own meshes. Can anyone help please.

    My specs are Q6660, 8GB RAM, Radeon 3870, Windows 7 64bit.

    February UDK build.

I get around the issue by just making a second UV channel in my 3D app of course, but still curious as to why the function doesn't work, as it could be handy sometimes. If the results it generated are good enough for some lightmaps.

What are your exact repro steps in order to get this issue? What 3d program are you using, importing methods, what are you doing after getting the mesh imported into UDK, ect... The better the steps are listed out, the easier it will be to find what is causing this and fix it!

So far it's happened on all meshes for me, but I just did a quick, simple, cube test now, as few steps as possible.

I just made a cube in Modo, no UVs (it says 2 uv channels once imported, no idea why).

Exported the cube with UnrealASE Exporter for Modo v1.08

Imported ASE from content browser, the dialog box that pops up on import I just hit ok.

Then I go to static mesh properties and hit generate unique uvs, and ok, doesn't matter which channel I try. Then the error message pops up.

Ok, thanks. We will try this method with Modo and get back to you!

Yeh I managed to fix this by changing AllowD3D10 to False ( i had set it to True previously) in the engine ini file. Seemed to mess a lot of things up that one.

Aha, thanks for the tip, I think I might have that set to true as well.

    EDIT: Yep, that was it.

Does it do anything at all? Visually? The D3D10 setting

Tbh I haven't noticed anything special, I was trying to get AA to work a while back and turned it on. But it seems to cause all sorts of probs (including crashing the editor with latest Nvidia drivers) so I turned it back off.

Could we get an official response as to what setting D3D10 to true does? If it actually changes visuals in any way, or any performance optimization?

I searched the documentation and couldn't find a single mention of DX10...

I know this is a really old thread, but I'm having the same problem. I never had any problem with it before, but I've changed PCs, version of 3ds Max, and even the version of the UDK, so maybe one of those things has something to do with it. Anyways, it'd be nice to have a fix for this.

    Bumping this topic.

I am having the same problems when i try to create a unquie UV for my fractured meshes. I also tried on a 6 sided block and got the same results.

The settings have changed in the March 2011 UDK to D3D11 but the error name is the same. Any help would be great.

This has become a real problem for us, as we cannot use APEX desturction with DX11, & now we can't create UV's on fracture meshes. Even when i import the ase lightmap mesh from max, it doesnt work propperly.

That's the only available fix I know. I suggest Switch Renderer from 10 or 11 back to 9 works for me. Hopefully the issue will be addressed soon enough.
    What have we become!...

I've had the issue---but it's not a big deal. If that happens then I just go back into 3ds Max and do the automatic mapping for the lightmap UV there.

Same as above. DX11 renderer have no luck in generating UVs.

This issue is 2 years old and still exists? Wow..

I'm getting it while trying to create a fractured mesh.

Guess I'm dropping down to DX9.

I just tried DX11 again today and it still has plenty of issues.

if you have this problem, just create a light map in the 3d modelling program that you're using. I had this problem a few days ago, creating a light map in 3ds max and then importing it is more efficient than relying on UDK.

^ Not everyone has, uses, or even knows how to use third party programs.

It's an outstanding bug with the software and Epic should fix it.

If it does that then you're going to have to do it in a separate 3D program. Blender is free.
