+1. Sure, it's probably MS's code that caused the issue, but it was up to Epic to know about MS code changes coming down the pike and fix their game before the change hit.

    Big Grin Luv ya all

OK. To be clear with my thoughts...
I dont want to be offensive to MS and Epic.
I have respect for them that They gave me such a good game like Gears.
I'm enjoing their product very much. I'm thankfull and glad that they made such a fine game to play and watch.
I'm not whining about anything at all except that patch/fix for me and others to get our problem fixed.
I love GoW and I'm lookin forward to see GoW2 on PC (my very own dream).
I love UT3 and all UT series. I'm good with all Epic installment.

All I need is a patch/fix for GoW, and GOW2 on PC in the near future and my whole world will be perfect. hahaha
    SALUTE ME ! ! !

if it doesn't work for you then something else is broken and it's not epic's fault. Moaning about it and trashtalking the employees at epic isn't going to compel them to issue you a fix any quicker. Here, have a tissue.

Default I changing the date on this machine isn't going to work.

My games machine is also my media center. Yeah, with a good quad core, you can do this pretty well, and I get to game on my 46" plasma.

If I change the date, it will mess up the TV recordings going on at the time. In fact, it will probably totally confuse media centre.

Any suggestions on what I can do? I was about 2/3rds of the way through the campaign when this issue arose. I'd really like to keep going and finish the game while I still have the vibe.

Currently it feels like I went to see a movie, and I got told the end of the movie wasn't ready yet, so I'd have to wait, with no indication of how long I'd have to wait.

I'm a big fan of Epic, and GoW is yet another great game in my opinion. But, workarounds like changing the date do not work for all of us.

(And the workaround of changing the date makes a mockery of the original protection anyway. Perhaps someone has a script that changes the date for just long enough to start GoW, and then set it back so my Media Center works?)

I've downloaded this already and it wouldn't help.
I'm seriously thinking about what TEAPACK said but I dont want to reinstall and format my Windows for the problem with only one game. :<
If there is no hope for the GOW to work nice and smooth again - i'll do it.
But now I can wait for a couple of days.
    Maybe someone can help.

    what error you getting exactly?
I ran into a nasty error where it says something a bout registry entires being missing when ever I tried to patch the game.
Anyways to fix it I did this:

Search for a FirewallInstallHelper.dll file on the disc itself.
Copy that file into your windows/system32 directory
Your GOW should uninstall and install correctly now. If it takes ages to install you know everything is gonna be fine.

    My Error?

I've got the same error msg about Modified Executable Code.

I'm thinking... "Hey! Holy $#^%!! The new Fix is on the net! I'll uninstall GoW, install it again in fresh folder and patch it with a new fix!"
I did that but with no good results. Changeing the date didn't work for me.

I've got the same error after patching it just like before the fix.
(Even when I install the new Gears and patch it.)

When I click and run the Fix it gives me msg:
"Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found.
No update done since file contents do not match.
    "

I would request you to try these steps if you are receiving the same error message again.

    Step 1: Uninstall the game

    1. Click on Start
    2. Click on Control Panel.
    3. Click on Switch to classic view
    4. Click on Add or Remove programs
    5. Select the Microsoft Gears of War and click on Remove.

    Remove the game folder

    1. Right click on Start
    2. Click on Explore
    3. Click on Program Files
    4. Double click on Microsoft games
    5. Select the Gears of War folder and press the Delete key on the keyboard.

Remove the folder that has saved game content.

    1. Click Start, and then click My Documents.
    2. Right-click the Gears of War Files folder, if it exists, and then click Delete.
Note: If the Gears of War Files folder does not exist, close the My Documents window, and then go to step 3.
    3. Click yes to confirm that you want to remove the folder and all its contents.
    4. Close the My Documents window.

Step 3: Remove the game from Registry

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry editor at your own risk.

Remove the game entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

    1. Click on Start
    2. Click on Run
    3. In the box type regedit and press Enter key.
    4. Double Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    5. Double Click on Software
    6. Double Click on Microsoft
    7. Double Click on Microsoft Games
    8. Select Gears of War.
    9. Press Delete key on the keyboard

Remove the game entries under HKEY_CURRENT_USER

    1. Click on Start
    2. Click on Run
    3. In the box type regedit and press Enter key.
    4. Double Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    5. Double Click on Software
    6. Double Click on Microsoft
    7. Double Click on Microsoft Games
    8. Select Gears of War.
    9. Press Delete key on the keyboard

Note: The above steps will remove the Gears of War completely.

    Please restart the computer.

Step 3. Install Windows Installer Clean up Utility

We need to install the Windows Installer Clean up Utility to remove the residue of files remained after uninstalling FSX manually.

    1. Click on the link given below and click on Run.

    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...bd/msicuu2.exe

    2. Click on Run and then click on Run again.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Windows Installer Clean up utility.
    4. After the installation is complete then click on Start and then click on All Programs
    5. At the bottom of All Programs locate and select Windows Install Clean Up.
    6. A window will appear with the list of multiple programs installed on your system.
    7. Click On Microsoft Gears of War and then click on Remove.
NOTE: Make sure that only Microsoft Gears of War is selected and nothing else.
    8. Once the game is un-installed exit the utility, restart the system.

    Step 4: Install the Game:

Install the disc and follow the instructions on the screen to install the game

After the game is installed, try to test the game. If you receive the error message of executable code, now try to install the update

    http://cdne.gearsofwar.xbox.com/uplo..._Microsoft.exe

After the update is downloaded, restart the system and try to play the game. Let me know after you have done these steps. If you still receive the same error message let me know yr system configuration
    Operating system,
    System Manufacturer
    Memory
    Processor
    Display card
    display card manufacturer
    Display memory
    Display drivers date & version

These were the same steps I had received from Microsoft and after I did this my issue was resolved

I found a fix if ur having trouble with the new patch. Go to ur game directory and look for the backup folder. In that folder is a startup file. I believe its named startup.a64 or something like that. Delete ur startup file in the binary folder. Rename the startup.a64 file in ur backup folder to "Startup" place it in ur binary folder and run the patch it worked 4 me. U DO NOT need to reinstall the game. Hope that helps

Default Relation to Unreal Tournament 3 demo

I downloaded a demo for Unreal Tournament 3 from nVidia's nZone, and I got this same exact message when I tried to play that. Now I have this message for Gears (which sucks because I just bought the game -- haven't even played it yet), but I am currently following all of the steps previously listed (reinstalling), and I hope that it will work now. Wish me luck!

Just got the patch, and it made the game work fine. Best of luck with everyone else's troubles!

Default HOW TO FIX "Modified executable code"!

There's a simple way to fix this problem. Simply adjust date and time settings (let's say, 1 year to the past). This will fix this unbelievably annoying error. However, some people had problems playing online after doing this. Therefore, while in the game, change date and time settings back to the present, which will allow you to play online.

    Cheers!

    Big Joe's Temporary Workaround
Works on XP x64 with installation in default folder....for other directories you must modify .bat file to reflect your on installation

I have created a .bat file that will let the game run.... the problem is an expired
certificate... this batch file does 4 things
    1. gets current system date.
    2. changes system date to 01-01-08(prior to certificate expiration).
    3. Starts Game.
    4. restores system date upon game exit.
anyone wanting a copy of this Batch file email Big Joe at youremailaddress@insightbb.com
