    Default INI performance & graphics tweaks here

    If you are not satisfied with your game's performance, or all the excessive blur/bloom effects etc, try some of these tweaks. You can find the ini in:

    My Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3 Demo\UTGame\Config\UTEngine.ini

    DO NOT CUT AND PASTE OVER THE ENTIRE SECTION! I have merely included a few of the settings for you to compare to your own.

    [SystemSettings]
    MotionBlur=False <-cuts out unnecessary blur fx
    DepthOfField=False <-same
    Bloom=True
    QualityBloom=False <-unsure, but probably helps
    Trilinear=False <-improves FPS

    Colors will appear more vibrant and the game will feel more like previous UT's. Excessive FX are just unnecessary and I think it's a shame that people have to dig in the ini's just to disable them to get the game to look how they expect.

    Make your ini read only after applying these settings.

    Curious what the settings below do:

    AllowD3D10=False <-I set this, not sure if it actually affects anything in XP
    DetailMode=2 <-very curious what this is

    Also, from one of the stickies, this helps hitches on Nvidia 6 and 7 series cards (just want to make all ini tweaks easy to find in one thread):

    [Engine.ISVHacks]
    UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=False.

    Change that line to

    UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True

    Why Bloom=true? Doesnt that enable light bloom (which eats FPS)?

    StaticDecals=False
    DynamicDecals=False
    DynamicLights=False
    DynamicShadows=False
    LightEnvironmentShadows=False

    Distortion=False
    DropParticleDistortion=False
    SpeedTreeLeaves=False
    SpeedTreeFronds=False
    OnlyStreamInTextures=False
    LensFlares=False
    FogVolumes=False
    FloatingPointRenderTargets=True
    Trilinear=False

    You can turn bloom off completely if you want, I don't know how much FPS it "eats" so I left it alone. Made a negligable difference for me.

    Why don't you explain why each one of these would be useful instead of just listing every setting as set to False? I'd prefer to stick to important things only, I bet you don't even know what many of those things do or how they effect performance. For instance why is disabling streamed in textures better?

    Good thread Bersy, trying out some of your suggestions right now... TweakGuides.com says they're working on an officially unofficial tweak guide, and imo they're always worth a thorough read.

    Sadly, it is painfully clear to me I am overdue for an upgrade...

    If it doesn't make a difference then you've changed settings in game, overwriting anything you may have changed in the ini. If you edit the ini, then stick with ini editing only or you will lose it all.

    Fine.

    StaticDecals=False ; removes decals
    DynamicDecals=False ; ditto
    DynamicLights=False ; removes dynamic lights (lighting up with rl etc)
    DynamicShadows=False ; shadows ? It improved my fps anyway
    LightEnvironmentShadows=False ; Environment shadows (same as above)
    Distortion=False ; dunno about this, I think it was default
    DropParticleDistortion=False ; ditto ^
    SpeedTreeLeaves=False ; default setting
    SpeedTreeFronds=False ; default setting
    OnlyStreamInTextures=False ; default setting
    LensFlares=False ; disables lens flares (sunlight effect)
    FogVolumes=False ; disables some fog
    FloatingPointRenderTargets=True ; default
    Trilinear=False ;enables bilinear filtering

    I'm wondering if some of those are DX10, so turning off some of that stuff one is kinda going from DX10 effects down to DX9?

    Anyhow, it would be cool if people posted their system specs, original offline FPS, the actual .ini tweaks they used then the updated FPS in the thread in my sig.

    I followed the advice given in this thread and it definately helped me a great deal. Previously I only got around like 15 FPS, now it around about 25, and even reaches 30 if I get lucky. Also the game now looks a lot better (before it was like your character's vision was impaired or something, now everything's crystal clear ).

    The linkgun, on secondary fire... when released, in the motion of the weapon's parts seems there's something missing there.
    Other weapons look great

    I could already run the game with the top capped FPS (62?) in 1920x1200 full detail (SLI 8800 GTS does that to ya ). FPS didn't turn any higher with Trilinear setting off, but turning off the depth of field, bloom and motion blur really made the demo look much better! Like StalwartUK said, before turning them off the game looked pretty ****ty (as in, your characters vision seemed obscured or something) because it wasn't crisp at all, it was really blurry/washed out, now it looks way much better (like 220% more ).

    Heh I though that thread would had been much worthwhile. I'd rather wait for www.TweakGuides.com to do a good guide. At least he takes the time to test everything and gives a description of what X thing does if set to False or True.

    As for the Direct X 10... this Beta Demo only have DX9 Path by the way.

    Thanks Nexx! And with Bloom turned off I get 60-100 FPS in 1920x1200 Texture Detail to the max you can have in the demo, and it looks so much better! Its like a different game lol

    Alright, looks better, heres my solution:

    Skip intro movies:

    #StartupMovies=Copyright_PC
    #StartupMovies=EpicLogo
    #StartupMovies=MidwayLogo
    #StartupMovies=UE3_logo
    #StartupMovies=Nvidia_PC
    #StartupMovies=Intel_Duo_Logo
    #StartupMovies=UT_loadmovie1

    with your method, the game probably looks for those files, since the commands are present, but cant find them, and after it cant find those files, it skips to main menu. When u disable the instructions in the .ini, the game wont even look for those crapmovies

    crapmovies pwned

    EDIT:

    If you want to disable these "Load Videos" which all got at least 1,5 MB, you do the following:

    #LoadMapMovies=UT_loadmovie1
    #LoadMapMovies=UT_loadmovie2
    #LoadMapMovies=UT_loadmovie3
    #LoadMapMovies=UT_loadmovie4
    #LoadMapMovies=UT_loadmovie5
    #LoadMapMovies=UT_loadmovie6
    #LoadMapMovies=UT_loadmovie7
    #LoadMapMovies=UT_loadmovie8

    After that you can delete the Crap Movie Folder for GOOD!

    It's not silly. This location allows multiple Windows users on the same PC to have separate profiles. I know plenty of people who grew up with UT and had siblings -- they were always fighting about settings and how to handle .ini files. Sure, a .bat/.cmd file woudl have helped, but...well, this is out-of-box. Much easier.

    Just deal with it.

    The best method is actually the following:
    ;StartupMovies=Copyright_PC
    ;StartupMovies=EpicLogo
    ;StartupMovies=MidwayLogo
    ;StartupMovies=UE3_logo
    ;StartupMovies=Nvidia_PC
    ;StartupMovies=Intel_Duo_Logo
    ;StartupMovies=UT_loadmovie1

    That ; remarks out the command entirely. No need for any further editing.

  34. #34

    I thought # would disable the command entirely, atleast it disables all that stuff in proper way

    Since its a simple ini file.. no program code or language. Ive always disabled .ini commands wit a "#" successfully, but its up to everyones favourite choice. hehe

    I don't think you want to do that, well fine for the demo, but they're gonna have cutscene movies for the single player campaign and I'd guess they'd go in the movies folder.
