    Default Unreal Anthology Linux Installer

had pre-ordered the Unreal Anthology and expecting delivery of it soon but find it very poor that a Linux installer is left out apparently. with Linux only growing in market share thanks to popular distros like Ubuntu, SuSE etc and with both UT2004 and UT supporting Linux from the very start it seems very strange to omit it from this release. does Epic/Midway not want to grow the Unreal user base? more Unreal players now = more UT2007 players later = more copies of UT2007 sold = more profit.

i know someone will post to say you can install it on Windows, copy the files to Linux, run the linux-installer.sh on Linux, copy files created to a temp folder, then run latest Linux patch, copy these files over the installer ones before then copying them over the Windows UT2004 install and then having it ready for Linux but the problem with this is it takes a lot more time, hard disk space, and most of all it requires a Windows install to be able to do it.

so Epic/Midway - would it be possible to provide a downloadable, unofficially-supported, yet working Linux installer for Unreal Anthology? this would make more people buy Unreal Anthology imo.

I agree, it's completely awful that most game developers today completely ignore other OS's

Forcing pc gamers over to Vista is just unfair. OpenGL still delivers nice cutting edge graphics for WinXP.

wow, finally somebody replied - thought this thread would've been deleted or relegated to the depths of this forum before anyone got the chance.

pity not many more people have posted to express support on this, i guess with Vista being released and UT2007 around the corner, everyone around here is Windows/UT2007-crazy at the moment.

    I guess so.

But I can see why DirectX is more popular than OpenGL, the lack of a new universial extension that use cutting edge graphics. When Carmack made the Doom 3 engine he had to implement two extensions which did the same thing. One ARB and one nVidia. Some extra work which is annoying for many developers, just ask web developers how annoying it is to program for the W3 standard and the Internet Explorer standard

OpenAL has become the new audio standard though, and SDL will hopefully be more popular when the 2.0 version get released.

I belive also that programming for multiple platforms also increase the stability of the application. Cross platform software has usually superb stability.

I contacted Midway support and they redirected me here.

Midway does not have a plan to provide a Linux installer. Your best course will be to go to the Epic Forums and post about this issue.

    Default Two cents...

Throwing in my two cents. I just bought the anthology after seeing the tux logo and assuming it would install. I would really love to get an installer.

Here I thought people were assuming it had Linux support since the rest of the games did. My guess is they messed up and put the Tux on the box by accident. They should at least send stickers on the stores to place on the boxes hiding the icon if they aren't even going to try to support it.

That one will be great, but how d'you expect to make an installer that unpacks InstallShield installer packages?

That doesn't matter; it's false advertising. Someone with money to burn on lawyers could sue Epic/Midway and likely make a decent profit. The sad thing is, that's probably the only way to get Epic's attention--I'm getting the strong impression that we're being ignored here.

Hm... I really wanted to buy this one. Nice price, I don't have Unreal 1/2 anyway. But I hoped for updated installer for UT99 (linux) and if there's no Linux support at all, it's bad - considering the games run so nicely on it.

the DVD box i have doesn't have the Tux logo on it (bought from play.com - UK retailer), however seeing as UT and UT2004 both support Linux i presumed (understandably) that Unreal Anthology versions of UT and UT2004 would also support Linux.

no reply from Epic or Midway on this issue yet either which isn't good as it either shows that they don't care about Unreal Anthology nor Linux users or perhaps it is that they don't read these forums often and when they do it is selective reading and replying.

    Thumbs down UT for linux

I bought the unreal anthology DVD because I know UT work under linux, but NOT this DVD :x
I will return this game were I bought it
I think make a linux installer for this DVD will not be hard, because there are linux installers for all games present in the DVD
Why can I got UT's legally if the current DVD in shops don't work with my OS ?

Just for the heck of it, try this http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthre...ghlight=UTGOTY

it works on the old utgoty game, maybe it will work on the disk packaged with anthology?

If you need an ogl renderer, I can post a link to one if it's not posted there, that is. I do know that there's a topic on it over at beyondunreal.

Let me know if you have any problems. You can simlink a lot of stuff if you need to. I might can find a link on that, too. I'm new to linux, I run Ubuntu and love it.

cheers but that appears to be tailored to Ubuntu Edgy for the original UT and UT GOTY editions only. Unreal Anthology is packaged in CAB files which the original UT, original UT2004, UT GOTY, and UT2004 ECE weren't packaged in.

anyone else know of any workaround or anything that doesn't involve installing on Windows or having all the files unpacked first?

    Default Ask Midway

    Hello all

After getting back to Finland from UK with the Unreal Anthology I also noticed that Linux installer was missing at least for UT2k4. Damn. I was actually so pissed off that I wanted to register to this board and post my opinions. I'm contacting the Midway customer service to inquire about the missing installer. I'd suggest everyone else who thought the installer was available on the disc do the same thing. Yes, that includes YOU. The contact web page can be reached at http://www.midway.com/page/SupportCu...r/question.asp . Please, use polite and clear language. By doing this we are sending a message to them. A message about the growing user base of Linux. A demand for simple service for the Linux users too.

    Are you with me?

Exclamation Made an installer for Unreal Tournament

Ok, I hacked this up during the weekend:
    http://asuka.fi/u/jpaalija/tmp/ut-an...aller_v.0.1.sh

It's a self-extracting Linux installer script for the "normal" Unreal Tournament of the Unreal Anthology collection (NOT ut2k4). I might make an installer for the ut2k4 and other games too if it doesn't turn out to be too hard. The installer works perfectly for me (it is set to use the opengl renderer). Comments welcome.

Thank you for contacting Midway Tech/Customer Support. Please see
    below for details about your
    inquiry to Midway.

Unfortunately the Linux installer is not included on the Anthology.
Midway do not support the Linux
    version of the game.

Default Unreal Gold installer for Unreal Anthology

As promised, here is the installer for Unreal Anthologys Unreal Gold:
http://asuka.fi/u/jpaalija/tmp/unrea...aller_v.0.2.sh . The file about 11 megs to make things easy, so bear with it. I've got a fast pipe for now, but feel free to mirror. I'm off to do some gaming, yay!

So it only installs Unreal? Not all of Unreal Anthology?

Hal: Currently I have made install scripts for half of the games of the Unreal Anthology collection, namely Unreal Tournament and "classic" Unreal. I'll try making an installer for the rest of the games during this february. As a university student my time is limited however.

The unreal-gold-anthology-linux-installer_v.0.2.sh is for "classic" Unreal only even though there is v.0.2 in the script. I'll explain this. The architecture of the script is the following: In every installer there are 4 files in the self-extracting archive:
    1) patched and/or stripped Loki Linux game files;
    2) generic installer script;
    3) installation launcher script;
    4) my custom readme file

The installation launcher script asks all the options about installation prefix, dvd mount point, etc. and calls the generic installation script with the right parameters. So, as the generic installation script gets capabilities of installing new games I set the minor version up. Therefore the Unreal Tournament installer is currently named ut-anthology-linux-installer_v.0.1.sh and the "classic" Unreal installer is named unreal-gold-anthology-linux-installer_v.0.2.sh . Unreal Tourmanent 2004 installer will probably be named as ut2k4-anthology-linux-installer_v.0.3.sh . And as a generic note: I don't know jack's ass about 64-bit linux systems and therefore I am unable to verify, whether the installation works on those platforms also.

Olav: Good call, I'll think about it.

nice usv. i haven't tried your installers myself yet (i am also a Uni student - in final year) but it is great to see someone cares about the Unreal Linux community to create these.

UT2004 and Unreal 2 installers would indeed be great also if you got the time later on.

Now i'm pissed I just bought unreal anthology to run on Ubuntu and it seem likes there's no way to get it working. I tried installing it with WINE and that seemed to work. I then downloaded the Linux patch for UT2004 and copied that into the UT2004 directory, but now is complaining about the CD-Key.

When are companies going to wake up and release not everyone wants to run windowz.

I'm afraid I cannot finish the installer during February as there is a *load of work in getting through all my university courses. But I'll try to accomplish the task during March. Sorry for the delay.

Epic didn't put the anthology together. Midway did. Legend developed Unreal 2 and Return to Na Pali. Epic developed U1, UT, and UT2k4 (with the help of other companies like Digital Extremes for some game content). All the Unreal engine versions were obviously developed by Epic.

Also, It would have been smarter to put tux logos next to the titles that DID have Linux installers available...but i think whoever designed the packaging just didn't think/know about it and the editors missed it.

Also, to get a "false advertising" conviction you're going to have to prove that it was intentionally put up to deceive linux users into buying it. Even if you could prove that, you're also not going to make ANY profit AT ALL. The MOST you'd make is the money you paid toward the game back. Worst case scenario for the developer, the court fines Midway and you wouldn't ever see a dime of that fine money. Either way you lost a chunk of money in legal costs.

which Linux distro did you install it on arthur24b6?

having a pure Linux installer is the best option though as it is just easier and doesn't require anything with the word "win" in it to install

naitkris - point well taken. I did it on kubuntu 6.10. I'd love to have used the linux installer, but I was to desperate to play. It would be great if somebody could post the installer from the ut2004 disk for those of us who are stuck in anthology land.
