    Map takes up way too much space...

    ok well this is a really weird problem...I have a small map...good for about nothing more than about 6 players...there's no custom things in it...all from external packages that came with the game...the only thing that's included in myLevel is the terrain maps and the maps for the layers...the terrain is 512x512...I only used like 10-15% of that then used the visibility tool to delete everything else...got about 4 layers too...in the end it comes out to 16mb...I even deleted all my layers and it's at 11mb...what gives?

    There's your problem.
    128x128 is enough for even massive maps. 256x256 is more than enough for massive maps with detail. 512x512 is just totally unnecessary.

    And 11mb isn't that much these days. Zip it up and see what's left of that.

    zipped up it's 750kb or so...I'm just kind of worried that when it's on servers and people don't have the map and they download from servers it'll be too long to download and people just won't bother...I'll try reducing the resolution of the terrain maps and see what happens...

    Files are typically compressed when they're on servers. I had a 42mb map and it only came up as 17mb when downloading from a server.

    Also, if you want high-detail terrain, you can still make it relativley big, but in the TerrainInfo's properties you can go to TerrainInfo->TerrainScale and edit the values in there. It's 64x64x64 by default, changing it to 32x32x32 will still use the same texture hieghtmap, but the tiles that make up the terrain will be twice as small, giving a smoother look.

    is there a way to reduce my terrain map to 256x256 or lower? could I just export the thing into photoshop or something...resize and import?

    I thought of this, and tried it. It was a disaster. I f I am understanding your thoughts.

    I wanted to increase the size of my terrain polies and keep the same shape. I should have known.LoL
    No worky. With terrain you just gotta think ahead.

    well slap my ass and call me billie jean...it works...I basically just exported the terrain map...then opened it in photoshop...after that I cut out the place that had my terrain...opened up a new file that's 128x128 big and pasted it in there...the terrain is a little screwed up as some parts are like 50000 units high but most of it is just what it used to be like...I'll probably have to retexture the terrain but that shouldn't be a problem since the map isn't that big to begin with...phew...I learned my lesson now...and it's now down to a cool 1.1mb file size...

    I actually got it to work... It was on the Cartwright map.

    i created a 1024x1024 terrain map with 10 layers and got a
    98 MB file hahah. who cares what size it is as long as it looks good still have about 130 GB free space
    next time i'll try 2048x2048 ,i think thats the max ,
