Introduction
Project Aron is a first-person fighting game which employs a tactical use of elemental magic in a competitive multiplayer environment. Movement becomes a essential part of this gameplay, and the environments are encompassed by the concept of truly free movement and maneuvrability.

Fighting is a visceral blend of swords and grappling where the final blows ends in gruesome executions. Magic is performed by using ones internal energy to reshape the elements of the world, for movement, defensive, offensive or supportive purposes.

So it's going to be set on medieval age?It won't be medieval or a Tolkien setting, but rather a setting of its own. We're currently unable to post our environment references publicly, but if you're interested to see the general style of the architecture and environments, drop us a mail and we'll reply with our reference images!

The ads are really annoying on those videos, but the progress looks fantastic. Games like this, Mirror's Edge, and Brink are where I want to see FPS go. I like a lot of the concepts you have like the curving fireball too.

The only cost is travel expenses to the studio, since it isn't close to where I live. I'll have to pay the travel, food and lodging for the mocap actor aswell, so it isn't like I can travel there whenever to shoot.

Where do you live and where is the studio?

This is looking real good! Best of luck with this project!

Looking really good. I'd like to know a bit more about the themes and the setting of the game.

..and yeah, those ads suck. You have to sit through the same commercial before every video. We've now created a YouTube account, and updated all the links in the first post, so there should be no more annoying commercials.

The setting is a fantasy, in the sense it's not anchored to reality. This doesn't mean it's medieval with sorcerers in dresses, orcs, nor elves (not a Tolkien fantasy).

For the environment, I've posted a excerpt from our Vision Statement here:
http://forums.epicgames.com/showpost.php?p=27790254&postcount=4

Technology wise, they have the knowledge from early 19th century, and then had a long time to refine this knowledge and technology, but without the progress we've had in the other areas. So the city is able to utilize steam engines, and machinery, but have moved on from simply function, and further into design and looks.

Here's a reference map we're using for one of our current levels:
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/4616/scrcopy.jpg

The theme is three different groups battles each others in this city, and they're all able to use elemental magic. The ones who have this powers are considered cursed and corrupted, and therefore are executed or exiled from this city.

Hope this answered your questions. If not, feel free to precise them a bit more and I'll do my best :D

Oh, we've also added a level designer position under recruitments!

Oh holy... You're taking the ferry? It's far from home I'd say...
I'm guessing that the parkour guy is from Stockholm?

I love the concept! Steampunk is one of my favorite genres. I also love how you seem to mix a sort of renesaince theme with a more industrialism touch to it.

We hope the mix of settings would be unique enough and provide plenty of excuses to jump and climb on stuff :D

SageHunter
12-02-2010, 05:33 PM
Haha like you'd actually need an excuse? I'm really curious on how the fantasy part will affect it though. Gameplaywise I don't think it would have that big impact, but it easily makes way for an interesting back-/story.

Cool. I live right in between Stockholm and Nynäshamn.

Is the mocap studio free?Well, sort of. It's part of the University of Gotland where I'm studying interactive media and game development, so I get free access to the studio.

Dunno how it is for people who's not studying at the school, but I'm sure you could always mail and ask them.

Dopefish, how is the university there? I'm thinking of applying for it.
They are going through some restructuring at the moment, so I can't say for sure how it will be next year.

They have two programs, one for coding, and one for graphic. Both of them share alot of courses in game design theory, creating board games and game systems.

One of the better things with the education is that they have alot of guest lectures from the industry, and at the end of each course year they have something they call Gotland Game Awards, where all students show the projects for their end of the year (first year, second year, and third year).

You can find out more about the school here:

Oh, I'm going there to do a lecture this friday, and start preparing the props for the mocap shoot. :D

Ah very, very cool. As someone who loves movement based anything (that's why I made my grap), I love the concept. There are two components to Unreal that make it so much better than any other FPS in my mind: 1) movement options and 2) creative weapons. In my dream game, I'd pair together the kind of movement options you're providing with creative, combo based weaponry. I just watched the vids and it looks really great guys! More updates! :)

Great dev diary. Nice and enjoyable to watch. Hope you guys will document the entire
game process and share your experience you got of it.

You recorded that on the school in Visby?
I first planed on taking a level design course there but found one that was closer to me
so went with that instead. Though one of my teachers was educated there.

TheDopefish

Yes, it was recorded at the University of Gotland :)

In my dream game, I'd pair together the kind of movement options you're providing with creative, combo based weaponry.
Thanks for the compliments! And our plan is to do spells that can be combo'd as a team. One guy provides a air pocket, which another guy ignites with a fireball for example. But as we've focused on the movement for now, we haven't made much progress with the spells yet.
