Okay here it goes, can I just animate the UDK/UT3 bones & then weight the mesh vert's to it after I do the animating ?

Sorry for the no0b like question , but the thought just crossed my mind.

You can animate the bones and export the anims as a PSA first, then attach that to a character later yes,

But you have to weight the mesh verts to it (skinning) in the base pose of your original skel or everything will become messed up.
