My Current Sysytem:

Gigabyte Nforce 2 ultra
AMD XP 2500 (333 fsb)
Geforce 4 4200 (128mb)
512x2 = 1gig 3200 Corsair XMS
120 gig WD HD (8 mb cache)
40 gig WD HD
Audigy 2

I'm thinking about upgrading from my Geforce 4 4200 (128mb) to the new 9600XT when it comes out in November. I've read previews on the card and there stating that in some cases it will barely beat out the 9700.

For $200 this is great. Plus with ATI giving away Half Life 2 for free and I'm there.

But I'd like to know if this card is going to perfrom adequately on newer titles or will it be crippled.

BTW, I have an 19" lcd so I'm not going to be playing at 1600x1200x32. I'll be playing at 1268x1024x32 or I'll bring it down a notch.

From everything I read, the 9700 was a groundbreaking card last year. Then the 9800 was release with a slight improvement in improvement. Now the 9800XT is released with a slight improvement over the 9800pro.

The latter 2 have not had the same impact as the 9700 and I do not think u will notice much difference in performance ( unless you are into overclocking and the 9800XT should overclock quite nicely)

The 9900 according to rumours will have the same impact the 9700 had, capable of 2 x the performance of the 9800 :)

He was talking about the 9600XT, not the 9800XT ;)

It will definately be a big improovment over your GF4 .. but if it's better then a 9700pro needs to be seen, I hope not as I own a 9700pro and don't want a lower number beating my card :D, especially since that card would cost 250 euros and I payed 500 euros for mine.

no
the 9700 pro has double the pixel pipelines
the 9600pro/9600xt is a mid-grade card

You really should wait until actual benchmarks come out before making such assumptions. 9500pro has 8 pipelines and the 9600 pro comes very close to it on many tests. Oh and the 9600XT is not a mid range card, its a high end card with the 9800xt being a card for the enthusiasts.

PS. the R9900=9800XT, ATI changed the name to 9800XT because they knew there wasn't enough of a performance boost to warrent a knew number.

PSS. ATIs new duel chipset is called the R420 which will be out sometime next year.

That's not what is being rumored. Apparently the 9600xt can hold its own vs the 9700.

i was basing the increase compared to what the 9800xt is to the 9800 pro
maybe they will put a nice heatsink/fan on the 9600pro to make it clock higher?
Id say the 9600 xt should be neck and neck with what the 9500 pro can do overclocked(which is amazing)

420 huh?  got pot?
