...before you became a UT2003 player?

Im bored AND curious, a lethal combination ;)

07-08-2003, 09:25 AM
none of both !

07-08-2003, 09:42 AM
I've never played any of the Quake series... although I do believe that one of the Star Trek games I've played used a quake engine.

I guess that makes me a UT player by default.

started online life on the original Unreal on wireplay back in August '99.
Moved over to UT1 when the demo was released.

Now exculsively on UT2003, and now the community Liaison for the UT2003 section at wireplay :)

full circle i'd say :D

Monogamous UT'er

UT1 all the way. For some reason I found UT1 a lot more fun than Q3 at the time. Tho' on second thought Q3 was probably way better balanced in DM and TDM... I think I might actually like Q3 more than UT1 right now, except of course for the lame hellish theme and lack of story and ambiance.
Good thing I don't have to choose anymore. UT2003 is here.

07-08-2003, 12:10 PM
i used to hate q3, but then that coz i had a crap ping, and never played clan arena.

now i play clan arena f*ck loads tbh. that almost make q3 my main game !! tho im playing more ut2k3 now.

07-08-2003, 12:25 PM
ut - i had played quake and liked it, but it just wasnt as good...

07-08-2003, 01:21 PM
what is this Q3 you speak of....:weird:

07-08-2003, 01:33 PM

Just now really getting into UTk3(various issues). Though, I mainly spec people I know rather than play.....i know....weird.
Still playing primarily Q3, mainly because it's not difficult to get a LAN going on any given weekend with friends.

I was a Q3'er for a couple years. I would not say I was a 'fanboy', as I was always open to different games. But I am a fan of Id games tho. Now, the only game I'm playing online is UT2003, and hardly anything else offline either.

I bought q3 and UT at about the same time. (They had been out a little while before I got my 1st home PC.) I liked UT, a lot. Played a lot of singleplayer and botmatches offline. Playing it online was a sour experience for me tho, which is one of the main reasons I ended up going to q3.

My thing is FPS shoot-em-ups, DM and TDM mainly. Some of my first pc gaming experience was playing Doom2 deathmatches on the lan at work, and I've been hooked ever since. ... I've tried getting into BR and CTF, but the experience just hasn't been stellar for me.

I dunno if it's just me, or what, but I'm a little bit afraid that my days of playing this type of game online is just about over. At least with the amount of passion I had for it. It's just getting too hard to find servers that I like, and to avoid all the wankers. I think joining a clan (that scrims and plays ladders) might be a good thing to do, but I've had no offers to join any in this game (other than ones that seem to take anybody). Seems a hard nut to crack unless you're so good that you get offers to join...

I guess I was more of an UT player
I tried Quake but i didnt really like it as much

07-08-2003, 02:20 PM
UT -> UT + UT2k3 -> UT2k3 + Q3 -> UT + UT2k3 + Q3...

(the bit without UT is when I didn't have enough hard drive space to kep it installed...)

07-08-2003, 02:43 PM
Pretty much niether, but I did play a little bit of UT while I only played 5 minutes of Q3 :D

07-08-2003, 03:28 PM
I suppose you're talking the original UT eh? Well I played more Q3 then UT at my buds place so I guess I'm a Q3 player :D

07-08-2003, 03:34 PM
started doing multiplayer with UT1 for the most part (I never had a PC that would run q2 and the like beforehand), then gradually began to like q3 more as I played it, though at first I didnt like it.

Now I'm basically 50/50 as to playing UT2/Q3. Q3 feels more fun than UT2 still, but UT2 is a bit more immersive and offers more in the way of tactic. And hands down wins as far as far as editing goes.

I started U1 as well. Back before I had a PhatPipe. Played the UT demo more then any pc game I'd ever played before (except maybe the space quest or hero's quest series), and had the cable guy at my house on the day the retail released. That first year it was out I put in about 30hrs a week.

I played a fair amount of Q3 too, and would have played more if more of my friends liked it. It wasn't as good as UT, but it was fun. UT has the translocator, and dodging, and those two things make all the difference in the world. Needless to say, because I liked both, UT2003 was awesome. I dug it being UT with some serious Quakeishness. It was like, perfect. Needless to say, it is now like the only game I have installed.

WoT here.
WoT led to JKii with led to HL with led to UT which led to UT2k3.

07-08-2003, 05:06 PM
I played both.

I played Q3A first. Ironically, it was the morons at the Q3A forums bad-mouthing UT that piqued my curiosity about it. How bad could it be?

I tried the UT demo, and though it kicked ass, so I bought the full game.

I played both about equally at first, but gradually started spending more time with UT, until I was playing UT about 90% of the time.

They are both good games in their own right. I just enjoyed the pacing and variety in UT more.

It makes me weep for the human race when I see people saying "UT RULEZ!!! QUAEK SUX!!! LOLOL!!!" or vice-versa. Fanboys should be sterilized to prevent them polluting the gene pool any further.

The UT demo blew my mind, I just had to get the game. Quake3 I bought later mainly for the mods but the main game was pretty good too, just not quite UT.
I felt Quake3 was better at smooth close combat play, whilst UT had much better maps and varied gametypes, plus some great long-distance combat with sniper rifle etc.

I'd call myself a UT player mainly, it was my first DM game and I played it quite a bit more than Q3, and played both of them far more than UT2003. But it's a shame some people got stuck in a mentality of thinking they had to like just one, either Q3 or UT, as they both had their good points.

Quake 3.

I started with Quake 2 in the dorms, CTF with people on your floor was the bong! I was hooked on the rail gun from then on out. I perfected my railgunning skills, and enjoyed the grunts and growls of Quake 2 and quake 3.

For some reason UT never really turned me on. I would show up at a lan, and UT would be the order of business, I enjoyed playing it, my quake skill transfered well. But I found myself wanting to gib someone with the one and only rail gun. It worked for me.

UT2K3 changed all that. It has the best of both worlds, and I have never had a desire to go back no matter how much *****ing i have to listen to from people that want to make it more thier own.

UT1. :D

A UT player, I would say. Although Quake was the first game I played regularly over LAN.

11-19-2003, 08:06 PM
played UT since first demo

played UT2003 since first demo

going to play UT2004 from the first demo

11-19-2003, 10:15 PM
Neither. I have since played UT and Unreal Gold. Liked them but like 2k3 more, maybe, feels more polished. Although I loved some of the old/odd weapons in UT.:D

11-19-2003, 11:51 PM
Nice necro guys.

11-20-2003, 12:02 AM
Seeing as though this is a forum for the UT community, I cant see a better place for such a poll.

11-20-2003, 06:59 AM
I'd definitely call myself a UT player - I've never been able to get into Q3 - everything seems a bit random and unstructured, although it's got a lot of plus points, too. But from the first time I saw UT, I was hooked and utterly, utterly amazed.

11-20-2003, 07:30 AM
Where did "Wolfenstein 3D" go?

I wasn't really committed to any FPS before ut2k3. I had played a little bit off all (Quake 2 the most I guess), but none of them really hooked me.

Ut2k3's visual style just had me sold though. It fits my scifi preference like a glove (except for the colorful weapon projectiles though  )

Never played Quake.
So when people say UT2k3 is like Quake, I can only say UT2k3 is like UT, with better everything...

11-20-2003, 10:40 AM
Started out as a UT player, but now I am a UT player & a Quake player since I started playing UT2K3.

11-20-2003, 10:49 AM
I never have played any of the Quake series, though a lot of the games I play atm use a version of the Q3 engine.

....I play these more than any UT game.

despite that, i'd still consider myself a UT player as UT is the game that brought me online (be that good or bad ;) )

11-20-2003, 11:40 AM
Where is the option for both?
I hate incomplete polls...

Unreal player thru and thru :)

11-20-2003, 12:12 PM
I've been a huge UT1 fan and Q3 hater, so my choice is clear... :)

11-20-2003, 12:53 PM
i consider Q3 as the more "HARDCORE" DM experience,
while UT is the more "MAINSTREAM" DM experience ;)

11-20-2003, 01:02 PM
UT

No limitations, nor allegiance.
I'll Play any shooter that is polished and gradifying.
Right now it's UT2k3/iCTF, looking forward to UT2K4.

11-20-2003, 02:36 PM
started with ut, but moved to q3 because it was more balanced and had better movement. plus the skill level was huge. got love for both though.

11-20-2003, 05:11 PM
Duke Nukem 3D 1on1 over modem. Then nothing cool showed up until UT came along :)
Got UT2k3 immediately when released since i was mislead by the naming convention to think it actually was a sequel to UT, uninstalled it within a week... :(
Since then the UT2k3 box has been sitting on the shelf collecting dust... But hopefully UT2k4 will change all this :)

05-10-2009, 05:01 PM
i think UT4 was the best!!
