    Default Critical Error (UT2004)

After a long time without playing UT2004, I decided to play again today. I was hosting a server and playing online with a friend of mine.

At the end of the second map, only a few seconds before we would have won, UT2004 crashed, giving me the following error:

I restarted the server, and after playing for some time the server crashed at the exact moment I killed a bot. Again, I received an error message:

I don't know how to read these messages, but it appears to be some problem with the bots. The last time I played UT2004, many months ago, the game would only rarely crash. When it did, it only happened at the moment I killed a bot (mostly the Romulus model).

So if I'm not mistaken, the most probable cause of these crashes would be a corrupted file, most likely related to the bots or ragdolls. Is there any way to restore or replace those files, without having to reinstall UT2004?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, there is. Firstly, try the obvious solution: run chkdsk on the drive that contains your UT2004 files. If that doesn't help, repatch the game (it may overwrite the corrupt file). If that doesn't help, you can manually copy files from the UT2004 media to your installation (although if it's something like Anthology, you'll have to use tools like UnShield to extract the files).

Note that this can also be caused by custom packages being used and corrupt.

Indeed, hence why reinstallation is still preferred (if you can't get the above methods to work). As a matter of fact, the issue could even be due to corruption in OS files, in which case reinstalling the whole OS would be the only way to fix the problem. But that rarely happens.

    Thanks for your replies.

After running for four hours, chkdsk finished, saying it has cleaned up minor inconsistencies on the drive. Since then, I've played 15 matches (10 hosted online and 5 offline) without any crashes. The problem seems to be fixed now.

    Thanks again.
