Default How to add skin to a skeletal mesh

Well I have been trying to look around in the documentation, google, and finally youtube. I do not know if I am wording it wrong but how do I add "skin" to a 3d model of a character that has the checker board model. Is it also possible that one of you can link me to a tutorial or something.

    Hi,
Skin a model is pretty important if you want animate it.
All these operations are done in the 3D modeling software you are using.

--> To Skin a model in 3DS Max
Select the mesh, go to Modifier pannel, and add "Skin".
Then, in the Skin pannel, add your bones.
Now your model is Skinned, you can export it with the ActorX exporter.

I have a skeletal mesh in a psk file, and I am using the 2013 version of 3ds max student edition, I try to use gildor's updated version of actor X import, and exporter but it doesn't seem to work for me. Should I try to downgrade the version I am using?

    Ah, that's the problem.
To add a Skin to a model, you have to do it in your 3D modeling software. The UDK can't do that, he just "read" it.

Is there any working importer for 3ds max? because the one I have either makes the model disappear when I try to export it, or is just not functioning when I try importing.
