Default Core 2 Duo Conroe: What's my best option for smoother UDK performance?

I've read through the minimum specs requirements and my pc can run the current UDK beta, but it's sluggish. I expected that since it's old hardware.

The current pc I'm using has this inside:
    Core 2 Duo Conroe @2.4ghh
    nVidia 7950GT
    Antec 430W
    2GB RAM

I 'only' have $150 with me so a pc overhaul isn't in my future. Is the videocard like a Radeon 7750 going to help me with a smoother time in UDK? Or is it the processor? I know with Valve games, it's more dependant on the processor, but I was wondering if this was the same with the UDK? Would anyone know what my best choice is? Better videocard? 2GB More RAM (32bit OS)?

To be honest, pretty much all of your components are quite lackluster. and only upgrading one will only give you a bottleneck.
Upgrading the graphcis card will pretty much guarantee you need a more powerful PSU, and upgrading the PSU alone won't do anything.

You might be able to get away with the processor for a while yet.

In your situation and spending limit, you'd be limited to getting more ram. But again, that will pretty much just leave you with a bottleneck with your other components.

Please don't send me private messages asking how to use UDK unless it has to do with my work, everything I can teach is already out there.

I am not support, I am here to learn myself.

Honestly you may end up with problems until all of that is replaced. The lag MAY be fixed with a better graphics card, but it's a stretch considering the OS needs most of your current ram to run properly. Couple that with a slower processor and you're still looking at a lot of problems. Also, unless you find a higher end card used somewhere, $150 bucks won't be much help for a new graphics card. You also would have to check on a bigger power supply to help run the stuff and for a new processor you'll probably end up needing a new motherboard as well.

With only $150 dollars I would recommend to see how much RAM your motherboard can handle and try to max that out or ad as much as you can, then try running older versions of UDK (from 2010 or 2011) as those run a little smoother than the newer versions on old PC builds. Then just start saving up where you can for a new build.

Looks like I have to make do with what I've got then. I can't seem to find the archive for older UDK builds, the Previous Versions on udk.com only go up to February 2012. Is there a reliable site that holds the older ones?

The older releases are still there. Replace the year and month of the EXE's address going back as far as October 2010 into your browser's address bar.

overclock ur processor, use readyboost (win 7), optimize ur system better(registry cleans, startup entries etc) and update ur drivers (processor graphics).
save that 150 and make a new pc fund!

UDK by default is set to almost maximum visuals; you can optimise it for performance quite vigurously.

    - and as everyone has already stated; its time for an upgrade.

    - i can tell you that a NVIDIA 9800GT will perform extremely well with your current setup, current PSU will cover it; although it is vital you upgrade to 4gb ram, i would also recommend the first 3 beta's of UDK and not much further for your rig.

    - i have a single Core 4gb with a 9800GT and it still runs UDK ok; not great but ok, although this would be the lowest PC i have reserved for emergencies.

Save your money, then when you get around $1000, go to http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/
Post a new thread and get suggestions on what components to use. You can build a great pc there for less than half of what most retailers would charge.
