Are there any good sites with Detail Maps available for download?

Your best bet would be to make them yourself. You can quite easily make a tiling 256x256 image using a noise filter, convert it to a normal map. Or just take a grainy texture, tile it, create a normal map. Its pretty easy to do.

Noise textures won't give you really nice results. Best way is to make them out of textures from different materials like wood, sand, stone, rust etc. There are some good examples at the UDN page: http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/Terra...tance%20detail
Also diffuse detail maps are often more important than normal detail maps.

Yes they are. You can put 3 of them into a single RGB texture (one per channel) to keep the texture sample count low.

Well, using textures off the net (mainly from CGTextures) I made 57 grayscale detail textures and you know what? I'm gonna share them with all of you people
