If you have millions of dollars to invest and a studio / publisher to back you, sure. If you are an individual / member of a small indie team, no, it's not really possible.

Search the forums, there is a lot of threads in regards to the same question.

To clarify: is it possible? Yes. Is it practical for a small team? No.

That is, if you have the desire and the means that are possible?

most of the work your talking about is in the scripting. with just the basics that already pre-defined for you...NO.. but if you know how to program you can.

well you don't really need millions of dollars to create a mmorpg.. the millions that the big development company's spend is because they outsource alot of the visual and programming to specialized company's.

I think you under estimate the amount of work that goes into turning this engine, designed for a max of 64 players, into something that can handle a player count as high as MMO's. Not to mention FX design, level design, environmental design / 3D character modeling and design (armor, weapons, different races, factions, and genders), rigging for everything interactive, material / texture creation and implementation, game programming, engine programming, UI design / programming, AI programming for both hostile and non-hostile NPCs, cinematics, animation for everything, sound for everything, music for all zones, dungeon design which includes unique AI and boss fights. Quality assurance / testing that has the ability to sift through every zone, every quest, every cut-scene, etc, and make sure it works. All on a scale of an MMO.

Simply put, creating an MMORPG, regardless of the game engine behind it, is a massive undertaking, which is rarely taken up by fully funded game studios, let alone any indie / casual team.

So yes, given the determination and time, anything can be created. But, how would you handle 4-10 years of successful game development without having a substantial amount of money being invested into the project?

    http://forums.epicgames.com/threads/...-an-MMO-in-UDK!

it doesnt take millions of dollars to make a mmorpg, yes it will take more than most peoples paycheck, servers will be your biggest expense. but creating the world and content can be done without having to spend millions. and i must also say he didnt say dc universe quality, he just simply said "Tell me please, is it possible to create the UDK MMORPG on the engine". and i said yes but it will take alot of scripting to do so. a small team can create a mmorpg in their spare time without having to spend millions..

their are lots of cheaply made mmos on the market. it doesnt have to be extremely graphical pretty to be a mmorpg.

I have said a few times now, making an MMORPG IS possible with the Unreal engine. My argument is the practicality of making one for 'cheap'.

Pretty sure you would need C++ access to properly support large player count and large servers network. Possible on UDK? NO. Possible on full UE3? Yes.
