Default Maybe a glitch, maybe my incompetence

So I downloaded and installed the most recent UDK just last week. I looked online for a tutorial because I couldn't really do much with the documentation (I have issues with following written instructions) and every video I found they had four view ports at once. "Ok," I would think, "Perhaps that's in preferences and they'll explain it." But then they create a cube and it has a blue checkerboard texture but lo and behold when I do it there's no texture and I can't see what I'm doing. So I need to know, is there some special thing I need to do?

    TL;DR
I don't have four viewports at once and when I create something they don't have a checkerboard texture.
    Wat Do?

Either switch to unlit mode (the third from the left)

or place a light inside your level http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/DominantLights.html

To switch the 4 windows there is a button with two boxes on the top right of your window.

Thanks guys... any chance you all could link me to a really descriptive tutorial or maybe explain to me how to add things to the world? I tried following the documentation and tried to use the builder brush but I can't get anything to appear in any viewports. I have NO IDEA how I did it before... Still thanks for helping me once already.

Yeah I've seen and tried both those, taking a swing at them again. My problem is that when I start messing with brushes or even when I just start a new map there isn't a red wireframe box or anything. Its just the blue grid and if it matters I'm in the unlit view. I think I'll just attach a screenshot...

    So what do I do?

Also I'm watching some of the videos from those links that seem relevant to what I need.

Have you tried hitting the "B" key? that toggles the visibility of the builder brush.

Ok, when I click on the screen I get nothing, I press B and nothing happens. When something does happen it shows me four red squares with no lines connecting them. I did try adding the brush when only those four squares were available to no avail.

Can you post a screen shot of these four red squares you're getting? Also, what are your PC specs?
