Default Mediocre at multiplayer after years :/ Got any tips, gears?

    Hey everyone,

I been playing the Gears games since 2006. I ignored multiplayer in the first GoW, but played the campaign on all difficulties and then went for GoW2, did the same and after beating the campaign on insane, I made my first steps in multiplayer and horde.

Now I never became a superior player online, I never picked up the wallbouncing for example. I did learn about two-piecing but it only worked half of the time for me. Other than that I usually sticked to using the lancer/hammerburst rifles.
I kept a pretty bad k/d ratio of 0.8 and ranked up to level 78 the normal way in GoW2 until we used the ring capturing trick during an XP event to boost to lvl 100.

And here I am, in GoW3. I STILL don't get the hang of that gnasher even though I looked into guides and clips about popshotting, strafing to dodge shots and some more wallbouncing.

After so many years and little progress gained, what would you suggest for me to try next? Should I stick to my rifles or insist on forcing myself to use the gnasher and hope to get better someday?
It's weird, because sometimes I enter a temporary trace superstar mode, lol. Yesterday for example I was playing KOTH on Trenches and I went into an area with 3 enemies, all ranked higher than me, and I hipfired one to bits, wallbounced around and killed two more. Then I look at the screen and I'm like "... DID I DO THAT?"
It's as if its in me, but I can only use it for a few seconds every other day, hah.

Additional question: Of the rifles, which one do you suggest, when not going for the gnasher. The Lancer is so damn weak, I start to hate it for multiplayer. The Retro is so damn powerful but hard to use at medium and long range. Short bursts work but still, it's hard.
Hammerburst suited me well in GoW2, but did they reduce it's damage for GoW3? It feels like that to me.

Anyway, I just would like some advice from you guys on how to proceed best.
I'm rank 99 still, about to get 100 and re-start for the first time. But reaching rank 100 a few more times at this pace will cost me years.

    Thanks in advance!

Straight up, the learning curve is rediculous, but if you stick with the game, it will all start coming to you naturally. If you plan on playing a lot, stick with the gnasher and lancer; those 2 starting weapons are the best well rounded ones you can have. And look up YouTube videos for GOW 3 - watching other people play as well as listening to what they have to say is one of the most helpful ways to improve.

    Thanks Chris for the reply.

Well, I been playing some guardian with a team in a party while attempting to get an achievement (which we all got after like 3 hours lol), it was remarkable how much easier the game becomes just by playing with people that form one team with you match after match.

I always used to just go into random games, end up with two and a half man and pretty much get mauled by good teams.

No wonder I rank up so slow, lol.

GW, Chris has great advice. Watch the videos on YouTube, they were a big help for me. I am not the best with gnasher but I have improved a lot. My K/D was at 0.6 about a month ago and I am currently at 1.1.

Nice job. Wish i could say the same. I am at a solid 1.0 but i know im better than that because my account was banned for a week, used a different account, and after playing ranked tdm for a week i ended up with a 1.4 k/d

Im pretty good with the gnasher myself and i find the trick *right hand advantage* works. Keep them on your right side when you fight but try not to be on their right side. You know the gun is on your right and it actually registers shots alllot better when they are on your right. You can also flip this my using left hand advantage by looking around a corner on the left and pulling off so you have left hand advantage. It may sound confusing or stupid but it works, trust me. Also what they said watch videos, practice, and step out from behind the lancer more often! Gnasher is a great weapon.

to get better, play with and against other people that are BETTER than you. figure out how to beat them. play private KOTH with some friends and just go all out free-for-all on eachother with shotguns. watch what people do in certain situations, and start trying to predict where your target is moving next

Play Ranked. quick is usually a lot easier and less competitive. If you want to get better play ranked

watching videos will give you some helpful tips, but to get better you will just have to practice. and it has to be good quality practice if you want to see improvement.

the biggest tip is to play people better than you. at fist it will be hard but then youll realize yourself getting better

I do notice I get better but only very slowly and not really big leaps forward.
So I force myself to use the gnasher when we get close and personal >_> but I lose a lot.
Lancer feels so damn useless when someone runs up close with a shotgun. Jesus, I can empty an entire magazine, he shoots once with his gnasher and im gone. Can as well equip the gnasher myself then and hope for a lucky kill.

I score most xp from capping the ring in KOTH. It's funny when I'm second (or even top scorer) in the team with only 9 kills while theres someone under me with 32 kills but less points scored.

    Thanks for the replies.

Practice! practice! practice! Someone will always have your number whether they have you beat in skill, connection or patience...and sometimes dumb luck.

Find the one thing you are great at doing and emphasis it to it's fullest and learn to guard a weakness with your strength.

This is all I needed to read. 90% of the dominant gnasher players were hardcore GOW1 online players. They have had the most experience with creating angles in shotgun fights so it will come naturally to them. That is all gnasher battles are in gears is manipulating the movement of your character to create a kill angle while avoiding your opponents'. Mix up your movement - don't just wall bounce or just strafe. I'm not even kidding sometimes I actually just stop moving completely to throw off their rhythm. Really the only time I bounce is when I know a guy is about to have a kill angle on me and I have to evade quicker than a strafe to recreate the situation or in 2,3v1 situations to move faster. If you've been playing for as long as you say then you should have a feeling for this by now and just need to work at it. You should definitely be able to tell when you or your enemy is in a gib spot. Just use your player movement skills to avoid that spot as best you can while lining him up with yours.

So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or you may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

I'm probably not the most eligible person to give you advice as I don't play gears multiplayer as religously as I used to, I usually play horde and beast.

    But..

I have a 1.6 K/D Ratio and I find myself doing well usually when I play, My advice is similar to that already stated.

Just play more and watch how others play you will pick things up.

But also consider the fact that while the shotgun is perhaps the staple gun of gears that it may just not be for you, everyone has their own style.

For example I'm sometimes doing very well in shotgun battles but when I know I'm just not with it I avoid them, stay away from rushers and get my kills other ways or concentrate on the objectives.

Perhaps you should focus on what your already good at, If your good with a lancer then use it and just be the best YOU can be with the gnasher and use it when someone rushes you because you have been kicking ass from afar.

Don't be afraid to play your own way.

This link's to a good vid on youtube about using the Longshot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_EfPrl_Z1o
I've recently started to buckle down on my own skills as well, and youtube, good ol youtube, has some worthwhile videos from people explaining how to really take advantage of particular weapons and even about the way you move your character around, etc. This Like Butter guy from the Longshot video has more good ones. After watching this video once or twice then setting up some private matches on easier settings to practice, lets just say I get A LOT more headshots! =)

abuse the **** mechanics of the game.

best advice: don't play it at all, you can't compete against how the game works(bulls).

I am kind of in line with the OP, been playing gears multi for a long time since GOW1. Played GOW2 a ton and now the same with three, (although not as much as I should since im only going about 2-4 times a week now for about 2+ hours) and I am passable with a gnasher, and can get 1v2 and 1v3 sometimes. But I am more of a tactical minded person when im calm, and usually am that guy trying to find the side you arent watching and push you into a bad spot with my lancer. Recognize your weaknesses and either adapt or compensate. Me and 2 friends of mine ended up getting rolled in 2/5 matches by some loudmouthed idiots rockin' the SOS/Retro combo. MY weakness right now is defense against those two. Our team weakness is ignoring power weps.

But, dont be like me, dont rage out. WORST thing you can do to yourself. When that happens to me I stop thinking and begin rushing in like an idiot, like I have something to prove, leave my team, and the game crumbles. And when that happens, the game gets a sour taste to me. All from my silly anger.

Keep playing, put yourself at a disadvantage constantly to get better, and try to enjoy the game. Even when losing, try to find something funny.

Use a retro lancer, and pre-active your Gnasher.

Since Gears 3 doesn't care about individual skill, you need to be really to good to don't lose it facing Teams that actually knows how to play. I recommend you just keep playing and don't depend of the rifles, power weapons are your friends and communication its very important. Good luck.

All of these guys are giving you great advice.... but one guy said let it come naturally, that's key with the gnasher. You have to let your shotgun game flow it can't be something you think through its more like an instinct. Let it come to you in due time because when you force it you'll start screwing up (I learned that from personal experience) and the gnasher lancer combo is probably the best. The lancer isn't really for power its to keep your enemies back at a distance. Another thing is watch your surroundings and don't rush blindly into a fight. Wallbouncing around corners and up halways isn't just a way to win a gnasher fight it can save your life from a planted bolo grenade and can help you get away from that fight and regroup if you are at a disadvantage

Stick with the lancer, it's not as weak as you would believe. 8 bullets to down. 6 active plus headshot bonus multiplier. Retro is 6 then 4 active with no headshot bonus ever. Hammerburst is 7 then 5 active. Of course you don't want to use the SO to maintain a good K/D also, try lowering your sensitivity then slowly raising it back to normal. I'm an experienced player and then this works for me when I get in a funk. A good strafe is better than a wallbounce so make that your primary learning goal. Don't be afraid to go to GoW1 also when the time comes to learn wallbouncing.

Sounds like your worrying too much to me. Its not all about the Gnasher, you need to use the right gun for the situation. Learning the maps and reading an opponents move so you can put yourself in the right place at the right time is the key more than anything.

If Why not try playing in a custom game against the hardest bots, I don't know if it will be challenging but, you sure can practice wall bouncing and different ways to kill people. Thats what I do with sniping and I seem to get a little better with the sniper even though I suck with it.

It's a trial by fire, trust me. xD Going from horde or beast to versus is like taking the disc out and changing games - you have to be good at fighting people, and the only way to do that is to fight people (as unforgiving of teachers they can be).

Thanks everyone for the replies. I just started again playing some KOTH, since there's apparently a 8x xp multiplier active, so I might try to reach the next lvl 100.

But when it comes to my skills as a GoW multiplayer player, I'm afraid I reached my limit.
I just cant improve my skill. Taking the gnasher almost always results in dying, unless I get lucky.
But I can't enjoy my game if I only depend on luck.
So I go back to lancer, and same old story repeats itself.
Lancer feels so weak to kill, I switch to retro, but retro is so heavy on the recoil it's only good up close or at worst at medium distance with separated bursts.
Hammerburst I wont even try anymore, they nerfed it since GoW2 right? Less damage it seems.

I really hate this because I actually LOVE GoW and I like the competitive teambased modes.
Looking forward to Judgment too. Just wish there was some more accurate matchmaking so I'd end up against people of MY "skill", meaning .. people with a 0.9 k/d ratio. 0.0
