It was also just a example. You could apply the same to other characers too - like Baird.

People don't ask for it, but given the chance, it'll happen when people try to be funny. And it would be funny, for all of one day. If it ever was introduced, Epic should use it sparingly, perhaps what some people have suggested here with basic customisation of established characters.

I'm not at all suggesting that Epic are planning this, and I'm not worried about it happening for Judgment, I'm just explaining why I think it's a bad idea.

Just to clear it up though, I never said reasonable levels of customisation is a bad idea, I said 'Create a Gear' is a bad idea. The examples posted by LambentHammerburst are pretty good.

Okay, maybe lazy is too strong of a word but it was a little poor because they talked about giving a verbal language to the Locust then abandoned the idea in favour of something simpler. Considering how important the Locust were to the storyline, I thought that was bad form.

Personally, I would have just made the Locust speak Latin. It's a very old sounding language. It's dead and it's sounds amazing when it's spoken. It's got plenty of words that end in "is" so it could have been great for the Locust, who tend to hiss a lot.

I agree that the characters make Gears stand out and if everyone just made their own generic helmeted Gear something would be lost, so I am against the full-on customisation some seem to want. That said, for example, if you could take an existing character and say add interesting battle damage to his armour while keeping that character as who he is and his look, that could be fun.

It would detract from the overall feel of the game for me. Gears has always been a game that has set characters you can recognise, I think it would be a shame to lose that. Just seeing people playing as a nameless character with no story behind it would be worse than what we have now I think.

But that already happens with COG Gear, Golden Gear and to an extent, Onyx Guard.

I feel that one of the key things that helps set Gears apart from the rest of the shooter market is the use of characters online. You aren't just playing as a nameless shell of a solider, your character has a personality, different phrases, a different voice etc. I know this only really applies to the CoG, but you get the idea.

When I see the suggestion of being able to make your own character, it kind of bugs me. Why are these people so keen to see off the great characters we already have?

Include customisation and the option to use default character skins from the campaign.

Yup, I think set characters have been such a good feature of Gears since the beginning.

Customisation is something I'm unsure about, if it were just simple features of the characters like small sections of armour, I guess that could work. Welcome to the forums buddy

Seriously, though, why do people want a no-face gear? We have 3 of them in Gears 3--COG Gear, Golden Helmet Man, and Special Lt. Black-Armor Soldier #5. Those three are already the epitome of "no-faced characters." You have three to choose from! C'mon pre-teens, why can't you just be happy with what your mom buys for you?

Okay I'll probably get an infraction for that, so I'll leave it with this: Everyone is a COG Gear until they get their spotlight. Then they take off their helmets and suddenly, a personality is born!

Basically I'd be okay with them giving different customization options per character. Baird has goggles, allow those to rest on his head, be equipped on his eyes, or be gone altogether. Cole Train has rippling muscles. Allow for those to be hidden away under sleeves, or proudly displayed to the world.

Make them barely noticeable if they choose to go this route. Honestly I wouldn't care either way if they went with straight characters and no modifications or modifications up the wazoo, I'll probably enjoy it. I'd rather not have these crazy ideas of a "build your own Franken-COG," though.

Well it wasn't my idea, but I did expand on it a bit.

I think this way would be a ton more organized at least. If they happen to keep ranked matches, it'll be a bit pointless to pick a character during the voting/waiting, so they'll probably just create a tab that allows you to customize your character before you join a match.
