    Default Landscape not self-shadowing - May2012

Unless I've missed a setting somewhere (though I can't see anything in the actor properties) landscapes are not self-shadowing.

This Image Was Automatically Resized by using the Screenshot Tag. Click to view the full version

The strange shadowing by the rock wall (a static mesh) is the result of them having no backface since the landscape was supposed to hide that, and hence I first noticed that there was something wrong. I raised up the landscape on the right side of the image as a test, and as can clearly be seen it is casting no shadow.

I have not yet had a chance to try this with earlier builds.

    Chosker: Built with lightmass

Hotshot: your problem was the large gap in the back of your mountain. Since the backfaces of polygons do not by default cast shadows (they can be made to by making them two sided, though this will incur an unnecessary performance hit when your light source is above the landscape) the light simply passed right through the big hole and onto your mesh. The fix that you correctly performed was to fill in the hole and therefore cast a shadow.

Update: This appears to be fixed in the July 2012 build
