Default New Characters in NON-Unreal Game

Does anyone have some guidance for me on the process of implementing my own characters in a NON-Unreal game setup?

I have the models and animations, have them imported and animTrees set.

I just don't know where to go from there.

Everything I find seems to show me how to use custom characters inside of the Unreal game environment, "deathmatch code" etc, but nothing about using my own characters inside of my own, NON-Unreal game.

Simple things like just having NPCs walk around in my level, no inventory to shoot at me--they're just civilians.

I eventually want to have enemies shoot at me and all, but I just can't seem to get started.

Any help would be extremely awesome.

The characters are added the same way, just don't use a Deathmatch based Controller.
Please don't send me private messages asking how to use UDK unless it has to do with my work, everything I can teach is already out there.

I am not support, I am here to learn myself.

Another Tip would be to AVOID USING UT CODE AT ALL COSTS. UT classes work mostly with UT gametypes AND other UT classes only. Try to extend as simple as you can. use UDK classes MAximum. dont delve into UT.

No need to get so hasty. Extending from UT is fine as long as you override/alter the things you don't want in there. You might want to extend from UDK classes if you're making something incredibly far-removed from a character-based gameplay style, but you can add things like civilians by extending from UT just fine. I have some in my own game (dancers at a nightclub).
