Default Static mesh and terrain shadow errors

I've been building an outdoor environment and have been running into some problematic shadowing issues. I'm currently lighting the scene with a single dominant directional light, but when I build lighting in some areas I get vast, black shadows for no apparent reason. Usually they are on the Static meshes, though occasionally on terrain as well (as shown in screenshots). The shadows are not absolute black, just very VERY dark. I'm wondering if it might be something to do with terrain and static mesh shadows interfereing with each other but i'm not sure.

the cliff faces are constructed of a single model, repeated and overlapped to hide repetition, which may also contribute to the issue? they also have multiple LOD models, though I doubt that would effect things.

    Default

Well, I've found a partial solution so far. Increasing the shadow-map resolution reduces some of the incidences of this strange shadow issue, but they are not completely gone. I've seen a lot of people having trouble with shadows on terrain, but i'm not aware of any comprehensive solutions so far. Any further suggestions would be super
