Default Slenderman's Legacy - WIP

I'm making a new game based around Slenderman.

It already has a level being designed, and I have written some of the basic logic for the game. I'm trying to make it extremely suspenseful, so I have set the lighting extremely low.

If you have knowledge of any other series, or videos, or threads, or books on Slenderman, please let me know.

Videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzywC...ature=youtu.be
The houses in this video are temporary. They are just there to test code (like Slenderman's logic), and will be replaced with more house-like houses later in the development process.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKa6Odnz2A0
There is a lot of temporary objects in this video. The model, the houses, an the arena. The final game will look much different. It's only like this basically until the logic is complete.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P23joli-GNY&feature=plcp
Again, most objects are temporary, adding onto this the HUD. The HUD Will be much nicer in the final version. Basically showcasing a new, better sprinting system.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aq9l5rMvakQ
Showcasing some of the graphics of the game. This is a subway system, thanks to Pulse0o0 of these forums

Showcasing some more graphics of the game. A sample factory, with a hidden easter egg (I show pretty clearly). Again, thanks to Pulse0o0 for the models!

Characters to be in the game:

1. Of course, Slenderman. - Entries 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 23, 26, 29, 40, 43, 44, 45, 46, 49, 51, 52, 54, 56.
2. The masked man. - Entries 18, 19, 23, 33, 35, 50, 52
3. Hoody - 41, 58

Pictures of the various characters (NOT 3D models):

Masked Man:

What I have done to add to the suspense:

1. Obviously, suspenseful music.
2. The directional light is set at a brightness of 0.01 or 0.02. I'm switching between them trying to decide.
3. When you walk into any buildings, the lights are at a dim level, flickering as if they are about to go out.
4. Your flashlight works for 30 seconds, and then flickers out and is off for 10 seconds to recharge. I'm debating increasing the on time to 1 minute, but I'm not sure.

What is planned to add to the suspense:

1. Slenderman is going to always stay a bit out of the range of the flashlight, barely visible, apart from when you get closer to finishing the main objective.
2. Adding the Marble Hornets videos into the game.

What Slenderman's logic will be:

1. He will have an aggression level randomized between 0 and 100.

• Aggression 0-30: He will practically ignore you, unless you get too close.
• Aggression 31-60: He will always stare at you, and likely stay at the outside of the flashlight's range.
• Aggression 61-100: He will charge at you, and you will need to hide from him.
• The aggression will increase no matter what depending on whether or not you are looking at him, and your distance from him.

2. He will always wander the map, and if he sees you, and his aggression is high enough, he will chase after you. You will then have the chance to run back to the safe building (the building you spawn in) or find a place to hide.
3. If you get near his "home" (most likely to be a sort of cave), he will instantly teleport into the end of the cave.

I will consistently update this thread with progress reports. Pictures of the level, pictures of slenderman, music being used in the game, etc...

Music being used in the game:

Pictures of the game itself:

The lighting of the game, and the flashlight you get. (Is it too dark? I think the darkness really adds suspense, but should I bump the lighting up just a little bit?)

One of the houses in the game

Misc Sounds of the Game:
http://soundcloud.com/allysman21/slendersound - WARNING: LOUD. This will most likely be used in some form when Slenderman is near you. (Taken from Marble Hornets Entry #5)

Videos I have watched/am watching to gain deeper knowledge on Slenderman:

1. The Marble Hornets series - http://www.youtube.com/user/MarbleHornets
2. "Slender Suits" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysgQ9...3&feature=plcp
3. EverymanHYBRID series - http://everymanhybrid.wikia.com/wiki...manHYBRID_Wiki

On a side note, I am willing to accept any ideas on how to add suspense to the game!

Oh, and the game will be free I will also open source the code, and any kismet will have screenshots taken of it.

Information on Slenderman (Well, "The Operator", but I'm going to use Slenderman as the name.):
Quote Originally Posted by MarbleHornetsWiki
The Operator appears to have no facial features, lacking eyes, ears, a nose, or a mouth; the flipper-like “hands” at the end of his/its extra-long arms seem to lack fingers or thumbs. It is unknown whether the Operator needs to breathe; he/it has not been shown to do so, but there is no concrete evidence that he/it does not. He/it does not speak or otherwise vocalize, & therefore any communication needs to be accomplished via other means, such as a proxy (see below). He/it does seem to be able to sense his environment, as evidenced in Entry #1, when he turned his head to face Alex, as if he/it were suddenly alerted to Alex’s presence. This implies that the Operator has a means of extra-sensory perception, some para-sense that has a wide field of detection, but needs to focus by turning his head to face a point of interest. Whether this is a form of psychic/psionic detection, an electromagnetic perception that does not require external sensory organs, or some other means of sensing is unknown.

The Operator’s appearance is that of a very tall figure in a black suit & tie. It is assumed that this is not his natural appearance, or even his natural form, but an approximation of human form taken as an affectation. This implies that the Operator looks the way that he/it does because he/it wants to do so. This could mean that he/it is doing this in an attempt to fit into his environment, & that he/it may drop this façade when not in the presence of human beings. The effectiveness of this disguise is apparently minimal, due to the Operator’s unusual height & lack of facial features, which belie his dapper dress & expose his unnatural origins.

The Operator’s gender & sexuality, if any, is unknown. He/it is referred to as a male, but given “his” unusual characteristics, this is largely a convenient convention of nomenclature. The Operator could just as easily be female, or (perhaps more likely) of an indeterminate gender. Since only one Operator is known of with any degree of certainty, there is no way of knowing his reproductive practices, if any.

The Operator moves very slowly & stiffly when directly observed by eye or camera. However, he/it seems to be able to cover distances very rapidly when not under direct observation. This leads one to believe that he/it is capable of some form of teleportation. Another interpretation is that the Operator operates on something akin to a quantum level of reality, where his position in time & space cannot be determined without direct observation (see below).

The Operator does not seem to be able to communicate directly with people. He is never shone[sic] speaking with or to anyone (or making any sound at all, for that matter), & his lack of a visible mouth seems to suggest that he is effectively mute. He/it therefore would need to use a proxy, something or someone to speak for him. This role is perhaps the purpose of the Masked Man, AKA totheark. It is possible that totheark serves as the “voice” of the Operator, a way of conveying his intentions & goals to others. As his thought processes are likely as strange & unnatural as he/it is, it is not surprising that totheark’s messages are bizarre & difficult to decipher. It is only slowly becoming clear that totheark (&, by extension, the Operator) wants J to get them something, & that that is why he/it/they are interfering with J’s life.

The Operator is obviously not a human being, or even a natural creature of earthly origin. He/It does not seem to obey the normal laws of physics as we understand them, & seems to operate at least partially in another reality. He may be some sort of fey creature, a demonic spirit, or perhaps even a tulpa emerging into our reality. I suspect that the Operator is a being from another dimension, one in which the laws of physics behave quite differently. To speculate further, I’d guess that the reality that the Operator calls home is one that behaves on a macroscopic level similarly to how quantum particles do in our reality. The reasoning behind this is that the Operator is able to distort time & space with his presence, & may even be able to control these distortions (these distortions seems to affect electromagnetic recording equipment, & perhaps other electrical devices, as well). These quantum-like distortions would explain the temporal simultaneity & spacial superposition that the Operator seems to exhibit. He/it is able to move through space (& perhaps even time) very quickly when not being observed, in a manner reminiscent of a quantum-level particle (“the act of observing disturbs the observed”). It is possible that direct observation of the Operator constrains him/it to our reality, giving Alex Kralie (& later J) a means of delaying the Operator’s influence. How Alex determined that capturing him/it on camera would have this limiting effect remains unknown.

Added a first video. This is just to show people how the lighting is, and how the flashlight works, and the music in game.

from the look of your screenshots, looks like the flashlight is running out of battery
I'm in favor of a more realistic value of lights vs. the usual overbright scenes in games, but more realistic doesn't mean "do it darker than it should". it might add more suspense as you say, but it could also lead to people going "it's too dark to even look at it"

If needed, I will most definitely message you! It definitely opens my ideas up quite a bit

Yes, the flashlight runs out of battery It runs for around 30s to 1 min (still deciding) and then flickers and dies. I'm working on converting the flashlight from Kismet to UnrealScript (more as a learning experience than anything else) and to have the light slowly dim as the flashlight dies, and then flicker and die.

As for the global lighting, I'm kinda stuck inbetween a rock and a tree with that. I think it's too dark. I truly do, but adding even slightly more light makes it way to easy to see slenderman. I guess that will change as I go along and make more visual obstacles than there is... how bright do you think it should be

The game has been renamed.

The Island of HABIT: Slenderman is it's new name.

The Island of HABIT is the name of what will become a new series with various supernatural creatures. The meaning of the series name will be revealed amongst the various games.

Have you heard of the game Slender.
The game was made in unity and is kinda similar to yours I hope with your games you can add something that can vary it from Slender I wish you best of luck.

I know the guy who made it, actually. My game will have a lot of stuff his doesn't. I have 3 voice actors for various characters, I will have an opening cinematic and various cinematics throughout the game, Slenderman acts differently, and most of all, mine isn't a standalone game, but the first in a series. There is more that I'm not willing to reveal until the first beta is released

So I was accused of copying Slender today... *sigh*

Better make copyright if you want to keep this IP... Someone will exploit it.
Thanks for linking my game

Honestly, my game is completely different. Different storyline, different actions on Slenderman, its a series, not a single game, it's fully voice acted, not just breath sound effects, it has more than just Slenderman in it, and it has many more cutscenes and all in it than Slender.

The only similarity in my game to his game, is Slenderman... which is barely similar at all since mine acts different, looks different, and even is fully animated. So... the character Slenderman has the same name, but is a whole different character.

I'm not dissing Slender, and I really hope it doesn't seem that way, I love the game. But I need to defend my IP from people thinking I'm just copying.

*EDIT* AgentParsec already knows about my game regardless, I told him about it a long time ago, after he posted a thread and I decided to announce mine as well.

P.S. I have been working on the idea for this game for almost 6 months now. Never posted about it because I wanted a fleshed out idea that will make a good game.

I think that you have got it well planned out. Also, if you need any help with the creation of the game, you can email me and i can help you out, but that is optional, if you want to createit yourself then that is fine, anyway keep up the good work, its a very good story and game plan!

That's for the kind words I am always open to collaboration, but I think I have everyone I need. I'm good on doing the programming myself, but I could always use someone to help me with any problems I encounter that I can't solve myself (I have solved most myself, but there are a few weird ones, and a few that took a couple days to fix). I have a modeler/texturer (most likely, waiting on response), and 3 voice actors. I'm not sure what else I could really need at this point besides support* :P

*Unless you are good organic modeler

I think that for the showcases you can make the video with full lighting ... afterall you don't show gameplay (if you do my bad ) just the look of game.

It's a very intresting projcet Good luck!

Ohh i forgot one question....are you planning of making this game a co-op?

I guess you have a point, haha. I will remake the videos with full lighting for now :P

I'm not 100% sure. I never really thought about it, as I don't know anything about networking in Unreal. I am sure I could do it after some review, but I would need to see if it would still achieve the same scare if the game was co-op. One in the series is guaranteed co-op, but I would need to find a way, both to work it into the story and to make it still achieve the big scares I want the game to have.

Yeah, and I am going to take jakoks advice, and just make the videos with full lighting to just show how the game looks. Was the subway to dark, or did that one work, because I thought it was relatively well lit.

I would say that for the showcase subway level was still a little bit too dark.

I have some idea. You should add a hand that holds the flashlight and the radio of the light should be a little bigger (light is not as powerfull on center as on the edged ... as it was blending). This picture shows what i mean.

I know, the next videos are going to be full lighting, and the overall lighting of the game will be raised a bit, since it won't be so open, and perhaps a bit of fog in the end.

Dude that looks amazing. Haven't checked the vids yet *workstation is hating me atm lol* but the idea and last screenshot is awesome. I am actually working on a fighter and more then likely moving back to UDK since Unity3D is just not working...and funny thing was one of my artists made a joke about adding Slenderman to the roster as a possible char lol. Been seeing a lot about Slenderman lately which is really cool to read up on. Best of luck with your project man.

So here is some stuff I'm looking for help for:
3D Modeling - Organic
3D Modeling - Environment
Icon Design, and a logo (preferably Vector)
What would be nice, but not exactly detrimental, is a custom Steam grid image

Also, if anyone is up for it, this game is also my senior project. I need a mentor for it. Specifically, 3D design, preferably environmental.

Basically, the mentor needs to have 5 years of experience, and be over age 25 (not my requirement, the schools. I know it's a stupid requirement, but I can't change it). You also have to be able to respond to me and the senior project coordinator by either e-mail, or phone.

If you're up to it, just PM me and I'll let you know how to register as a volunteer. Thank you!
