    Default Importing Material prb...plz help!!

    Hey guys,
I'm sorry to trouble anyone but I could really use a hand here. I've done my homework on the matter however I've been stuck on this prb for 3 days now and anything I tried doesn't work.

    Here's the prb.

I'm currently using the May release of UDK, just downloaded the new one about a week ago.
    I currently use 3ds Max 2012.

It doesn't matter if I create a model and put the mats on it myself or if I download one from someplace like "Turbosquid" and open it in max, I can't get the mats imported over to UDK.

I've tried using ASCII files like many others say, however I constantly get a error message about forgetting geometry, yet I've found that if I import an .fbx file I have not trouble getting the model imported into UDK, but any materials included on the model don't come with it. I just get what appears to be really bad green light maps, and if I restart the program, the mats are all replaced with the default blue and gray checker.

I do import as a static mesh, and I usually tell it to combined all, and then (in these cases when I want them) I do check on include materials. Can anyone please tell me why my mats are not coming into UDK, and how to get a mesh moved over with them?

From what I know it may be something I'm missing in my max setup, but I have no idea what. ANY advice and/or instruction here would be so appreciated.

    Thanks so much!

You can't import materials from 3DSMax or Maya directly to UDK.

No you CAN import materials from maya or Max, but the textures need to be a format that UDK understands, like .TGA. I'm not sure about complex materials like Mental Ray, but simple lamberts, blinns, etc. should carry over their diffuse, normals, spec, etc if you set the FBX to export the materials and the importer in UDK to import them.

If for some reason you can't get the materials to import, just import the textures and make the material yourself (which is actually how I prefer to do things anyway.)

The complex materials are the only real thing of interest, but you are right in that sense.

Thank you guys, ....I'm still having a little trouble with it, but I think this has helped put me on the right path now. I've started just creating the mats in UDK, and I think that is prb best in the first place. :-D
