Default Top 10 under-developed characters of the gears series

Okay this post is completely opinionated, and ill be glad to see your opinions. Your list doesn't have to refer only to the COG.
    Ok
10- Kim: the only background given about him is RAAMs shadow, and its only that he helped evacuate Ilima. More could have been done to develop him a bit more. He had leadership qualities ect.
9- Valera. Its just like she took up a squad spot and that's it. The only good she did was indirectly enlist jace
8- Barrick- Yet another random person. Wasn't in 3, so some won't ever know what happened to him.
7- Skorge- the kantus "cult" I suppose came out of nowhere in 2, and wasn't really explained; as well as skorge. He was basically the GOW darth maul.
6- Sam- Yet another walk on character. She just seems like the character that adds to bairds antics and that's all
5- Tai- Had so much potential to be a bada**, but it was all wasted.
4- Jace- he seemed to do more complaining than fighting. But it is a step up from his kinda cameo in 2
3- Dizzy- yet again, wasted potential
2- RAAM- in my eyes the proper leader for the locust. Stern, cunning, merciless and kinda scary. He puts the queen and skorge to shame. Another shame is that he was killed off in 1.
1- Clay Carmine- they had a giant vote for him to live or die and he wasn't even in 3 for a substantial amount of time. His "dramatic" survival wasn't even had zero merit. Epic should have made him survive an ambush of like 40 locust by himself, not a heli crash.

Jace, Tai, Barrick, Sam, and Dizzy had roles in the comics and novels.

I'm assuming your list was strictly based off the games?

What Bacon said, a lot of these characters have had defining moments. Jace is a main character in the comics and Bernie is in the books. Other characters intertwine between both novel and comics (which is really cool and I haven't seen other media forms that do this). All the wasted talk here is just because you haven't given the expanded universe a chance! I recommend the collected editions of the comics first. ^-^

The book Anvils gate gave some excellent background on Sam and how she came to being a COG. The books provide so much more insight to the characters in the game that if you haven't read them I highly recommend doing so. A lot of your opinions will change based on info from the books and comics.

Long story short: read the books. They're worth your time. Tai especially. You think he's badass in the game, go read Aspho Fields. He's one tough mf'er. Even Hoffman thinks he's crazy, and Hoffman was the colonel over the COG SF program. As for Kim, I wouldn't care to read anything exploring he's backstory anyway, because he was just a huge douchebag in Gears 1 and I didn't like him.

    SPOILERS!!!!!!

Barrick was the main character in the Hollow arc in the comics which was a six part story line, he sacrificed himself to give Marcus, Dom and Jace time to evacuate, he was dining of rustling so he knew his time was up so he made a let stand and fought off the attacking locust with his bare hands, ripping them in half. He was shot several times in the back by a beast rider and died.

Sam, Dizzy and Tai had huge rolls in the comics and novels, i don't want to have to explain what happened each of them because i could go on for a while. XD But i agree that Clay was wasted opportunity, i would have liked to have seen more of him.

Thanks for all those awesome spoilers, Para -_____- Just kidding, but that makes me want to read the comics. I didn't realize Barrick was such a central character. He's such a badass, I'm glad they made him a big part. Would've been interesting if his character had been incorporated into Gears 2 like Jace was, but he might've been added at a later point as an extension of the universe. Either way, glad they made him because he's awesome.

They don't have to be interesting or significant. Baird is under developed.

If Baird is underdeveloped, then by my reckoning, so is every other character in the game or books except Marcus, Dom, and Anya. We don't have any real detailed backstory for anyone else, except Tai. Honestly, I'd like a comic or some other form of media focusing on RAAM and his rise to power, or Myrrah. We know almost nothing about either of them. Myrrah especially, as there are some people who think she's human.

didnt RAAM's Shadow have some of his exploits?

Noone really mentioned the Kantus' but basically said everything else I was going to say about all the other characters. I always kinda viewed the Kantus' as religious zealots and priests of the Locust faith. I don't know anything about what the religion would be and I dont think the Locust have church every sunday but that doesnt mean the Kantus cant believe in something which gives them the power to resurrect fallen troops. They are kinda like dark arts, not necessarly "satanist" but have presitage beyond the average troop and are bred specifically and considered noble.

I kind of thought they were the leaders of the Locust religion as well, but I think they are actually basically the queen's personal warriors or something, because the locust "religion" seems to be Queen worship. Think about it, Shao Lin monks are considered strong, agile elite warriors. They devote their lives to learning martial combat skills. You don't think of Shao Lin monks and think of meditation, you think first and foremost of hand to hand combat skills. Kantus are all of that in locust approximation, minus the hand to hand. Their name Kantus is reminiscent of "incantation", which is presumably because of their healing buff. I don't think it's any kind of dark magic though, more like the scream resonates at a frequency that makes them get up. It doesn't even really HEAL, just picks up dbno enemies. They're still damaged though. That's just my thoughts on the Kantus though, none of it is based in any sort of Gears fact, just observing the way they act and the place they fill in the games.

I agree on Clayton. He was wasted in the game.

But agree with everyone else, I suggest you go read the comics and books to know more about characters like Sam, Jace, Tai, Dizzy and Barrick.

All the Carmines have been kind of wasted though. Clay just had the most potential. But they didn't really do much with Anthony, other than use him as a casualty, and Ben was almost a joke. I guess they did more with him than the others though.

The Carmines were redshirts. Im going get a little deep here XD:

A "redshirt" is a character who arrives on the scene without baggage or backstory, and who tags along with the lead cast until their inevitable death. From the moment this one-dimensional nobody joins an established team of much loved characters, one thing is obvious to anyone with a passing acquaintance with genre conventions: this person will die early on, in a sudden but perfunctory manner, laying down their barely there life in service of story.

More than cannon fodder, they are narrative fodder: they exist purely to show what fate might await the characters you actually care about.

That is their fate sadly, even so they have amassed a huge fan base, i personally am a fan of redshirts, especially ones who are well developed and have personality/relatable. Clay broke the mold of not dieing, but he was still technically a redshirt, because he really didn't add anything the story.

I really want clarification on exactly what the Queen is. A lot of people say she's human, but she can't be because she said Marcus and Dom were the first humans ever to defile the Locust Palace with their presence.

I think it did, but there's no way she would be one of them. They obviously hadn't created a perfect specimen like her if the security guy was saying the Sires were the future and hope of our race. Beside that, Myrrah approached Adam Fenix with the Lambent problem 20 years before emergence day. More than 34 years before the events of the games. Myrrah's old, and no way some random non-locust pops up in the Hollow and suddenly becomes the ruler of all of them. She sure didn't fight her way to the top, because she's weak. She was born the ruler of the Locust. But I want to know her lineage, is there a Queen like in a bee hive, that's born different from the Locusts but genetically related?

No, I want a pure spotlight on RAAM defeating the Cog numerous times, slaughtering countless Gears and destroying High Priority Cog targets, securing his victories for the Locust. The kind of victiories that leave the Cog thinking "Sh*t, RAAM tore us apart!" No random Cog squads shouting "I can't wait to fight RAAM!" or "lololo Die RAAM!" Just RAAM butchering Gears and destroying the Cog.

Hoffman was a douchebag in Gears 1 too. Hell even Baird was disliked a lot more. I'm pretty sure Kim would've grown to accept that Marcus wasn't a bad guy had he survived long enough with him, just as Hoffman ended up being man enough to accept that he was in the wrong to Marcus's face. Besides, the side of Kim shown in RAAM's Shadow ought to help prove this point too

I'd say it was much better than that, especially towards the end, him massacring the Onyx Guard and then fighting him in the Kryllstorm.

Just think if RAAM were the Locust King, leader or whatever? He would obviously be an awesome leader and think of the direction the games, comics and novels would have taken. The Darth Maul reference was funny though.

Your on to something here. Do you if there are there anymore books coming out? If so, could it possibly be about Myrrah's relationship w/ Adam Fenix? Someone should write a fan fic based off this notion if not.

Karen said she is done with gears, so it would have to be a different author.

I'm old enough to know where that reference comes from.

Correct me if i'm wrong here:

Aren't the Kantus the Locust monks? Religious leaders who worship the Rockworms? Like the one sinking cities in Gears 2?
I'm fairly sure through the collectables in GOW2 that Baird explains he found some religious looking markings and that the Kantus are the religious monks of the locust race. And that they worship the Rockworm, hence when the lightmass bomb awoke the Rockworm in 2, they were able to control it and use it to the fight COG by sinking cities.

Specifically SKORGE was the one able to control it, but it's possible the other Kantus could have controlled it. Everything you've said it correct, yes.

Maybe because the Queen was taken to The Hollow from New Hope as a child, and as such believes herself to BE locust. From the way she acts, i think she honestly believes she's one of the locust, when in reality she's just been in the hollow from such an early age that it's all she knows.

I feel that Griffin should be number one. Although I do not like him, we know almost nothing about him except for his angry disposition towards Marcus. He makes that brief appearance in Gears 3 and then he is gone with no explanation. My feeling is that Epic just threw him in there as someone Marcus could take his pain out of losing Dom on.

No problem. A lot of people don't realize that there are even books out there. But they do give a lot of insight to the characters and explain the changes in them throughout the games.

"The darth maul of gow" really is the perfect description for Skorge. Loved him, he was a badass, but he was gone as quick as he arrived. Would liked to have seen a lot more with him.

I would like to see more development of the characters AFTER Gow 3. How do they go back to "normal" when their normal meant fighting a hellish war on a daily basis? But getting inside the head of a locust like Skorge would have been pretty cool too.
