Default Best Tutorials on the Market?

    Hey guys,

I'm just wondering what tutorials you've found to be the most comprehensive and useful. Searching YouTube can be wearisome, as some videos may be very informative but stop after one or two tutorials, and some may have the information needed, but only after 30 minutes of slow going.

I was looking at the eat3D videos and some others out there. Are there any you recommend?

    Thanks

I really like the 3d motive stuff. Their foliage tut is invaluable.

By far the best tutorials out there and up-to-date are by Lex Luthor on YouTube.
He is really helpful and I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for him! He has 1450 subscribers and nearly 1 third of million views on YouTube which speaks for itself !

Here is his channel Lex Luthor

    Ah yes Solid Snake!
Your tutorials on Eat3d are the best out there for Unreal Scripting and Lex Luthor's for 3ds Max,UDK,iOS and now Maya too.

Because Lex Luthor doesn't have the MVP badge doesn't mean anything! Sometimes his posts on here have upset the moderators and I'm sure that's why he doesn't have it! In some ways its obvious that Epic Staff tend to deal out these badges to people who lick ass a lot, and Lex certainly doesn't do that! He speaks from the heart. The above comment doesn't include you Solid Snake, you are a legend on here and Lex has often linked me to your threads and pages on the UDN

I hadn't heard of Lex Luthor's stuff. Is his up to snuff with the paid programs as well? My only issue is that the free programs I've found tend to have misinformation or exclude any standard methods of practice. I assume that if I pay for some kind of program, it will conform to standard methods. I know that may be hard to come by, though, since it isn't a program that is widely used by professional schools as of yet. In the future, hopefully that will be different!

As for what I want to learn, that is a tough question. I've only been using UDK and 3ds for about 3 months, so any knowledge will be very helpful. I just can't find any programs that have any sort of reviews or opinions from people who have gone through them. I'll look at all these though. They seem very helpful.

Lol. what do you mean "paid programs" ? You aren't paying for any programs, you're paying for a tutorial. The programs don't come with the tutorials

These are no where near the best tutorials ever, you've obviously not watched any of Autodesks own tutors videos like Brian Mennenoh
The link you've provided is for a guy who has only been using Max for a year and half! Brian Mennenoh has worked for Autodesk for ten years and is Professor of 3d art at a famous University in the US.

Use the other meaning for "program" as in training regimen, not software program. There are paid courses or classes which I was also considering for more up to date lessons.

Obviously I was exaggerating. Still, if you are intermediate at 3DS Max, those video series are the best you can find BY FAR. You obviously haven't watched those videos. They are not meant to be 360 degree view of every single 3DS Max feature. They are meant as tips and there's very, very useful tips that you can learn from a guy that learned it from the hard way (as opposed to being professional at it for years). Thats why they are great. Thats why if you're trying to learn 3DS Max (ie beginner) you MUST watch those videos.

And you're OK mate, I don't need referrals for subscribers, if they have eyes they'll find them! Most paid for ones are completely and utterly useless because they were outdated two years ago! Solid Snakes are great and many of the people on these forums offering free tutorials are great too but if the gentleman wishes to waste his mommy's money, let him
One of the reasons I told Google to do one was because when you charge people for tutorials, they constantly message you for support because a lot of them don't watch the tutorials properly and end up messing everything up!
I had one guy who used to message me every day because he wanted to make an LA Noire type game, trouble was, he couldn't even create a box in 3ds Max! When I told him he would need a motion capture studio to rent or own, at least a thousand modellers and a few hundred programmers and several years spare, he got the picture! Some kids getting into game development play these games and then actually think that they and two friends can knock these games up in two weeks ....Not realising that LA Noire took thousands of man hours, millions of dollars and lots of tense frustration in the making..Then the addition of four or five movie stars for the motion capture!!!
I can do without idiots subscribing too ....They just fill my inbox with stupid questions ! All of my subscribers now are great....

Well don't worry, I'm not wasting my money. That's why I'm doing a thorough investigation on any tutorials out there before paying any money. One issue I have with your tutorials specifically is that they aren't geared toward what I'm looking for. I'm not looking to make an entire video game, by myself or with a team. I'm looking for tutorials on 3ds Max, Unreal, Photoshop, and whatever else I can get in a method that is easy to follow and organized properly. Most tutorials I've found that aren't professionally done don't have that proper organization.

You are joking aren't you? Bucky has never finished a series in all the years he's been on YouTube.....They are for the absolute basics and useless for anything advanced! Kids tutorials basically!!

That's what I'm saying! I came here to find out where the best tutorials are, whether they cost money or not, and if everyone agrees. So far there has been no consensus. From what I can tell, (newbie as I am) it looks like 3D Motive has the best price per video, and Eat3D has some good (but expensive) videos as well. Thank you all for your help and ideas.

Books can be nice too. Programming UnrealScript Introduction by Rachel Cordone from Packt, and my book on use of the UDK (intermediate) from an artist point of view.

I actually have Rachel Cordone's book, it is fantastic. So easy to read and follow!

I also looked at yours last night since I liked Cordone's so much, I figured it would be similar. I didn't realize the author posted here! It has been added to my wishlist, and I might jump on that later today.

as been mentioned before depends on what you want to do, making a game is a lot of work with a lot of different jobs, as you have found Lex has a good channel. but the thing to remember before you part with any cash is support, there are many people come here looking for help because a tutorial doesn't work
    UT40K:The Chosen - Warhammer 40,000 for UDK
    ut40kgeodav - UT3 Tutorials - Characters - Weapons - Vehicles - FaceFX
UDK Tutorials - Basics - Vehicles - Characters - Weapons

For a newbee, Eat 3d's Unreal Development Kit - An Introduction and Application may be fine. Although somewhat dated, you still get a good understanding of the
basics of the Unreal Engine. If you prefer a book, Alan Thorn: UDK Game Development covers many subjects and is still up to date. Unfortunately, both miss
important information (like terrain editing). Slightly more advanced is Mooneys book (he did mention it in his earlier post) Unreal Development Kit Game Design
    Cookbook
. I use it in my game design class. It has many well done receipes covering everything from Material and Lighting to Kismet and Cascade.

Although Gnomon and Eat3d is for Unreal or earlier versions of UDK, most of it is still applicable. I would especially recommend Visual FX for Games (Gnomon) which
deconstructs several nice Cascade effects. Also, Eat 3d's UDK Lighting and Post Processing is worth a look.

Beside LexLuthor you should look at Buzz 3d's videos either on youtube or at buzz3d.com. The videos are very old but exceptional well done for self-learners. And
they cover almost everything you may find in the Unreal Editor. Showmethatagain once had several free video tuts on using the (quirky) terrain editor. They are no
longer available at the afore mentioned site but you can try 3D Total. The
vids only cover the old terrain system instead of the newer Landscape system but they are still useful. The only thing that doesn't work anymore is the foliage
layer. In later editions of UDK, Epic did implement a new foliage editor instead.

There is a lot of other Unreal/UDK stuff out there but most of it can't be recommended. E.g. idtech365 tutorials covering basic techniques like Buzz3d but you need
to pay for it. I know only some of the tuts at design3com. Though they are up to date I would mostly prefer either Eat3d or Gnomon.

Hope that helps a little bit

    ROTFLMAO

I didn't know 3D Total had put my old tutes up like that... ok scratch that, I might have know then forgot (much more likely explanation).

    Anyways, like I said earlier...

    SOON >:-)

No really, I mean actually soon, I've got my site fixed up again and am just indulging myself in a little bit of fussing and paranoia before throwing the doors open again.

Also, I might need to go and say sorry to NinthJake over at blender artists for picking on him, he said nice things about me at 3D total...

design3.com has a set of subscription UDK video tutorials (including mine which covers terrain, done just before landscape was added to UDK) ... 7 hours of mine is still up, some episodes of which are free. their videos also include a NIUI kinect introduction which is very interesting.

    Hi Guys,

Just thought I'd mention after all the SOONs, that I've passed the point of soon and now have my tutorial site back up again
There's a free speedtree tute and I finally launched my "Lush grass in UDK" tute which turned out pretty cool.

Anyways, I made a proper thread announcing it here : http://forums.epicgames.com/threads/...again-Relaunch!

    Cheers,

Cool site. Only 1 free tutorial even though link and signature make it seem as if there are more than 1. You can find the same type of tutes on Youtube. Still Bravo for taking the time. God knows nobody wants a tutorial from me lol.
