    Default Sawed-Off Shotgun...

    Firstly, his is not a rant, well kinda. This is me wondering why EPIC nerfed the Sawed-Off to the point where it is near useless. Anybody know why? And if someone has the actual figures for the range and damage that would be much appreciated (pre and post nerf).

    For example: I was just playing QM TDM on Blood Drive, just me and some guy left against the whole enemy team, we were in the spawn room (spawn trapped because the spawns are bad). The guy on my team is standing by the door with his SOS (the best place for him to be), three enemies walk in huddled so tight it was impossible to miss (they are in the doorway so they can't move)...he fires his SOS at point blank range (no, his gun wasn't in them, as I know that affects hit detection). Only blood. Not a single kill. I downed one with my Gnasher, but the rest seemed to take no damage

    I'm not a SOS user, but to nerf a gun to the point where it is useless at its perfect range, is truly ridiculous. It was probably down to lack of consistency due to the connection, but for the entire of that match the connection seemed fine and he was doing well (wasn't getting bs'd).

    If EPIC nerfed the gun due to people complaining about it, why haven't they done anything about the other mechanics which are broken and are constantly the subject of complaint threads?

    It's not useless. It can still be used to great effect.

    It was only changed on the range factor because it was outdistancing the gnasher's gib range.

    maybe he had some latency issue (lag) between his xbox and the server? i don't use the SO but it doesn't seem any weaker than usual.

    I only use it in Zeta where the players tend to have better connections then most of the other rabble online. Plus with the Zeta buffs it makes it easier to rack up kills towards the medal.

    Otherwise in standard play I find it rather inconsistent but that may have more to do with people jittering around and everyone getting stuck on walls because we're matched with people way above tolerable ping limits (above 80 ms).

    The SO only had a inner radius nerf.
    Was 256 units -- now 222
    That was the only nerf it had.

    It wasn't a actual range reduction but rather a radius. They made it so the target had to be more in the center of your screen.
    The instant gib radius hasn't been touched - It's still 80 units (Gnasher is 64).

    I think I remember at one time the enemy could be directly behind you, and you could still gib them with the sawed-off lol

    Been a long time since I messed around with Unreal but the units are 16 = 1 foot right?


    Hmmm well wait doing things in UT probably don't scale with doing things in Gears.

    Thanks I now understand why he didn't get the triple kill...but I don't see how he didn't get a single kill.
    It must have come down to latency I guess.

    Still very possible. I got a Quinn ONCE with the Sawed-Off and it happened after the nerf.
    I still get Triples. They just require them to be clustered (I usually get it when they are doing a revive).

    I was aware they changed the range so it was less than than the Gnasher, because they said that the Gnasher always had a greater range, when it didn't!
    Just lately it seems to be nowhere near as consistent as it was...must be down to the damn EU server connections.

    Gnasher DOES have more range. Not instant gib range but range in general. The range the SO deals 0 damage - Gnasher deals about 180/215[AR] (4/3 shot down). Gnasher deals 100 damage if it hits at medium and 50 at long if it does.

    This is what they meant by Gnasher having more range. It has FAR more range.

    The sawed to me is no longer really annoying, just change up how you fight it and you'll end up on top

    Sorry, I meant gib range...my bad! At launch I recall EPIC saying that the Gnasher had a greater gib range than the SOS, but it turned out they were wrong/lied to everyone. Speaking of range for Gnasher...that could do with being toned down slightly, imo.

    If you try and use the SO like a Gnasher - you will die more than you kill.
    If you use it as a flanking and surprise weapon (like rushing enemies as they revive a teammate) - it's godlike.

    As long as the game is inconsistent, people can rant. What I stated in the OP proves the inconsistency, whether it is down to latency or the gun being less effective than it was previously. I don't use the SOS, so this is barely a rant. It was me asking a question, to which you have the severe inability to answer respectfully and without appearing to be what some would call a d*ck.

    Definitely agree with you there. Luckily I am allergic to using the SOS, and i'm far better with the Gnasher anyway.

    I will happily play against a team of 5 SOS users, it's the Retro Lancer which I despise...I won't rant about that though as I feel it would be both useless doing so and it would start an enormous argument

    I had a WTF moment early on Old Town, perfect connection...I shot Savage Marauder* bot in the head with the Longshot, fully scoped, whilst he was sitting swinging smoke grenade (surprise surprise!)

    I get that a lot too. More annoying with the Boom.

    4 people on Academy camping Ink at the end of the game on last stand. I sneak up behind them, shoot between two of them...nothing. Active and shoot between all four, get the triple. Active and shoot the forth running at me....the grenade hits him, but I die without the trade. Lose the round.....

    I suck with the DBS and for me to say it's "useless" comes down to my skill level not the actual weapon itself. Any weapon is useless if you don't know how it works... I still die by it, and I still see people getting kills with it so I know it works just fine

    It's NOT useless.

    Compared to the Gnasher, it is pretty bad.
    Put it on its own, and it's still really good.

    Get someone who is good with the Gnasher, and they'll **** people up with the SO. They won't be as effective as they would with the Gnasher, but they're still going to do damn well with it.
    Only in it's current form though. Before the nerf, it was tooo good.

    Currently it's good for the newbs, because they can start with that, get more confident with the Gnasher, and then progress onto the Gnasher.

    Gnasher users won't feel compelled to the SO because of its previous strength.

    SO is 3rd in my total kills (Gnasher, Retro, SO, HB, Lancer is the order).
    Use it quite often. It really depends on how you're going to play. I play support most of the time and the SO is ideal for this - HB and SO is a deadly combo.
    After 6yrs, the Gnasher has begun to bore me.

    I can agree with your last statement. I use to swap out my lancer for a Power Weapon, now I swap out my Gnasher.

    It's range out reached the gnasher gib so if the gun is made for close range it defeated the purpose of the gnasher

    lmao The gun is still a beast, its just now you cant herp derp up to someone and get a cheap kill (you can still do that but you have herp a little closer than before).

    The gun is far form useless. People need to realise that their hand sized magic death cannon no longer does all the work and they actually need to put themselves into a position where they can get kills now.

    Its still easy to get kills with but now you have to use tactics a bit unlike before...
