    Default Gears of war PC windows 7 64bit crashes at start of campaign

    os: Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit sp1
    cpu: AMD phenom II X3 720 2.8 Ghz
    graphics: ATI radeon HD 5770 1gb
    Ram: 8GB ddr2

    hi, yesterday I bought gears of war pc through games for windows live marketplace. I'm having trouble getting it to work

    I've been around the forums looking for fixes, I've seen a lot of places saying I must patch the game, (this being distributed digitally I assumed the patch was preapplied) so I downloaded the latest patch and attempted to patch
    I then got the error for "old file not found"
    So I googled this error annd everywhere I go theres people saying you need to not used a cracked version of the game or copy the startup.exe from the disk. . . well I dont have a disk I downloaded it from the marketplace
    so patching seems to be out of the question which leads me to being out of options really

    so I'm posting here
    ok what happens, the game loads up to the main menu just fine no problem, however when I go to the campaign and start a new campaign the opening cut scene will start, there will be a black screen for about 5 seconds and then the screen will flicker and I'll get a "gears of war has stopped working" box
    I've tried multiplayer and that seems to work however I've not found any games yet so I cant actually get into a game with less than two people, which is a shame because I just wanted to roam the maps to see if it works.
    I've looked around and there doesnt seem to be anyone with this problem, and I dont want to uninstal it and re download again because I've done that twice already.
    I spent £15 on this game, and while I do have the xbox versions of all three gears of war games I wanted to play the pc one, and right now I'm very disappointed
    any help would be appreciated

    I could try sending you the startup.exe from the actual disc if you want? then try applying the update

    I've seen on YouTube a video where this game is played with my graphics card maxed out settings so I know it can’t be hardware, I just don’t understand it tbh
    I thought it was odd the game didn’t come with any directx installer or any other kind of redistributable
    I really want this game to work, gears of war is one of my favourite game franchises.
    so yeah, how would you rather send it to me?

    Yeah, you haven't updated it, hence that GPU timeout issue. I will send my startup exe soon, I will need to get it off of the disc which Ineed to look for as I replaced it with a no DVD crack.

    From bad to worse.
    I managed to get my hands on a startup.exe from a gears of war iso, and so I backup up my legit games startup.exe and moved the new one in.
    I then ran the latest gears of war patch, it patched successfuly, at this point I was very happy.
    but I celebrated too soon.
    the game then asked me to insert my dvd rom (again I dont have one of those)
    I tried 2 seperate things following this
    I moved my legit startup.exe back over the new one and started the game, I then got the same issue I've been getting all along this GPU timeout issue
    so this got me angry, I then found a noDVD crack for the game, (I didnt want to resort to this but I was left with no other option and I do legally own the game)
    using the noDVD crack startup.exe the game doesnt get to the main menu before crashing
    I then moved my legitimate startup.exe back into my binaries folder.
    so now I'm left with no idea of how to solve my problem because patching doesnt seem to have worked.
    epic appears to have sold me a broken game
    unless anyone has any ideas of how to solve my problem, I know next time theres a game from epic I'll save my money.

    Get the VITALITY 1.2 crack for it, that is the one that works for me because I was fed up of having to have the GOW disc in the drive all the time just to play it.

    FIXED:
    Got the VITALITY 1.2 crack you suggested it still wasnt working.
    so I thought I was out of options.
    However a friend and I looked at the log files again, we both looked at the GPU timeout. He suggested it could be a driver issue.
    I didnt really want to go back to ATI catalyst 7 (I think that was the one when this game was new) because then my new games wouldnt play.
    So, he suggested instead to tweak graphics settings so everything was on lowest setting.
    THE GAME WORKED
    so from that I experimented with various graphics set ups to get optimum setting and also to gauge what the problem was.
    It turns out the thing that crashes the game is the "Direct X 10 anti aliasing" option.
    I have to have anti aliasing off completley or the game crashes and we're back to square one.
    why exactly this is I dont know, the game still looks good with everything on highest anyway
    while I'm here if anyone knows if theres a way to get antialiasing to work by all means please tell me, but other than that game works flawlessly now.

    Ah! DX10 option on GOW is buggy as hell, no wonder! It also makes very, very little difference so there is no point in having it on to be honest
