Default smooth custom character in maya

hey i used the human body mesh from mudbox and exported it into maya i then sculpted it in maya... it isnt smooth but when i press the smooth look it goes smooth but when i import it into udk it goes back to unsmooth... for me to keep it smooth i have to convert smooth preview look to polygons... only thing is it then goes up to like 200,000 polygons??? is there a better way to not having to convert it to polygons but keep it being smooth with low polys??

Ah, right. I've stumbled upon issues with that and maya in specific (maybe searching this forum will help). I don't know the cause or solution here, though a workaround is to export the mesh as FBX and then use the animations from the PSA. That works just fine.
