Sculptris is a great free sculpt tool to create detail for your model.

Wings3D is popular among low poly people it seems. It seems kinda clumsy but also really powerful.

silo is dirt cheap, super intuitive, and very straight forward.

Also, you can get 3DS Max for free, sign up as a student at Autodesk Students.

Although it can't be used for commercial projects, since it's an educational license

Seconding sculptris and blender. I'd personally model everything in sculptris, send it to blender, retopo, and import into udk. For simple inorganic shapes, blender could also be used well by itself.

I haven't used blender seriously for a while, but it in some ways seems to have features not available from the big guys - and it will easily do more then simple inorganic shapes.
Also, Sculptris is the best freebie ever - it is instant joy.

Yeah it's a shame Pixologic ended the development process of it by buying it from the developer. -,.- Otherwise I would use it regularly but since it will most likely be stuck in Alpha6 forever it wouldn't be wise to get too dependant on it. It could've become the perfect alternative to Mudbox/ZBrush.

I was looking at sculptris last night when i noticed this thread. How good is it for low poly models, looking through the gallery it shows alot of high poly models with perfect curves etc. Does it degrade the poly count easy enough or is this a complication system where we make high poly and manually go through stretching panels etc

Also I would say to use gmax, which is a free version of 3ds max. Bit older but can handle most of it and its almost like 3ds max. Sculptris for high poly and sculpting, gimp for texture painting, and xnormal for baking textures and normals.

Even for unwrapping theres a whole collection of software.

    link for gmax

    http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax

After that gotta find file converters to properly export the files but I think you can find solutions at the turbosquid community forum.

    eh?
Sculptris is a sculpting program .. you'll want to re-topologize - blender(free), or max have xlnt tools for this.

Gmax is too old to be useful

I would say go with Blender. It now has some good sculpting tools to use and the external BProjection script allows you to paint directly color on to the model like ZBrush/Mudbox and make it a texture. Here is an example: Click me!
I believe that if more people tried Blender in game development, it would also rise rather fast as a competitor to Maya and 3ds Max.
