Default Hogwarts - Greathall and more

    Greetings.

This is a practice project I've been wanting to work on for a long time. The Great Hall of Hogwarts (Harry Potter).
Spent the last 4 months learning Maya from the ground-level so that I'd have the skill to at least model this interior.
I know the lighting is pretty bad. Wasn't really something I thought much about lol.

    What's left?
    Still need to make:
    • Flaming particle effects for the fireplace and things along the walls.
    • Better banners. Might experiment with the cloth feature in UDK.
    • Couple more assets like chairs for the staff table and the sorting hat stool =P
    • And lastly, the enchanted ceiling O_O That's going to be fun.

    Cool

This is not bad actually. Feel the way you designed an Harry Potter-esque map and the atmosphere/lighting is good.

Would you like me to light it for you? Good lighting can really add a lot to a scene.

    Great job by the way

    Thanks.

Well, I sorta have the lighting almost exactly the way I want it now.

That is almost how it is in the first film.

If you think you can achieve a better result, then sure! lol

By the way, how do you open someone elses map? I suspect you have to throw the file into a certain folder or something.
Everytime I've tried opening someone's file, half the assets seem to be missing.

Oh hey, sorry, I didn't see this :P I have to admit, I do like the look of the updated version a lot more. However, In my opinion, the lighting could be made to look a lot more realistic if the lights appeared to be brightest nearer to the sources, whilst slowly fading to shadow further away. I'd be more than happy to give it a crack myself, but If you would prefer, I could walk you through the steps to achieving better lighting, by showing you the processes I would go through; in a video. I'd include things like making the light appear to flicker and giving the wood on the tables a more polished - reflective look, like in the screenshot of Harry potter.

I'm just making these suggestions because I thought you might prefer to make the changes yourself. I can definitely achieve a better result, but I'd like to be able to help you to achieve that result instead, if you wish to learn.

As for opening other peoples maps. You must ensure that the map file is located in the /content/maps/ section. And all of the packages associated with that map, are in the /content/ section of the UDK's folders.

That would be awesome! It would definitely be better for me to just learn how to do it myself. I just didn't want to spend a lot of time on it right now because the modeling was my main focus.

If it's not too much trouble, though, the tutorial would be nice. I'd utilize it for sure, to help fix up my map, and carry the learnings onto future projects
