I'm just making these suggestions because I thought you might prefer to make the changes yourself. I can definitely achieve a better result, but I'd like to be able to help you to achieve that result instead, if you wish to learn.
As for opening other peoples maps. You must ensure that the map file is located in the /content/maps/ section. And all of the packages associated with that map, are in the /content/ section of the UDK's folders.
