Default How to prevent resets without making a backup

After experiencing a screen freeze, quitting during a loading screen, leaving a match while it's uploading stats, or any of the other suspected methods of having your player data file corrupted do the following:

    > Start your Xbox console, and stay on the dashboard.

    > Go to the far right blade on the dashboard

    > Select "System

    > Select "Storage"

    > Select [HDD which stores your Gears 3 data]

    > Select "Games and Apps"

    > Select "Gears of War 3"

    > Look for "Player Data(Saved Game): [Your Gamertag]

    > If the Player Data file has the Infected Omen next to it, check the file size.

    If you have Re-Upped:
    >If it's 68 KB and you have Re-Upped you're fine.
    >If it's less than 68 KB and you have Re-Upped, delete it and follow the next step.

    If you have not Re-Upped:
    >If it's 64 KB and you've never Re-Upped you're fine.
    >If it's less than 64 KB, delete it and follow the next step.

    > If the Player Data file has a yellow exclamation mark next to it and the file is labeled "corrupted" select it and delete it.

    > After deleting the file, start Gears 3. After playing (1) match, your console will create a new file from the existing server one.

This prevents the possibility of a corrupted file on your console overwriting the one on the server. Hope this helps!

also occasionally player data becomes so corrupted it doesn't appear in the gears 3 list it appears right the way at the bottom fo everything on your hard drive under unknow item, you need to check there to

Might want to add, the file does not always have a exclamation point beside it. When mine happened, the only cue i had was the file size went from 68 kb to 42 kb

Thievius' doesn't include this method that I recall. It's dedicated to Cloud and USB backup mechanisms. This isn't so much a backup as it is a pre-emptive/proactive detection of the corrupted file.

Her's explains how to back up your profile.
This explains how to check and see if your profile is corrupted before playing.

Her's apparently has the possibility of messing up your profile.
This doesn't have any effect on the profile (except deleting it if it is corrupted)

Exactly. This is for people who don't want to bother keeping a USB around, and still want to protect themselves from a reset.

The mark is not always there though
It has NEVER been there for me and I've been reset 4 times already
Wasn't there for my brother either and the files size was the same as it was.

Mine is 68kb others normally are 64 for what ever reason.

64 kb is the standard. After Fenix Rising, a Re-Upped profile shows as 68 kb

It's in my signature. We've heard rumors that it can damage your profile further, which is why I made this thread.

So this is for if you think you may have corrupted your file like if your game freezes?

What if you are unaware and you start up Gears? That's when you should of had a back-up right?

I think I might just check my player data everytime before I fire up Gears.

I would still recommend cloud/usb backup... you can pick up a usb drive for only a few dollars if you don't have one.

I hope they do, it gets irritating to see the daily; **** Epic can't make any game work. I got reset when I use white 20 and it took me 6 months to get there.

Maybe they should do a link or something similar on the Event Calender. That way people that aren't on the forums can still no or at least view the threads.

No, I guarentee it will not damage your file. That is Epics lie/excuse to not Sticky the "How to make a backup" thread.
We shouldnt have to check our player data everytime we want to play gears, or have to make a backup. Epic needs to focus on fixing this issue instead of the weekend events and ways to ruin certain gametypes.

Please explain why they would need an excuse/lie to NOT sticky a thread? They HAD a reset sticky thread during Gears 2. So why would they feel the need to hide it in gears 3?

The answer is: They don't. They had their techs look at the backup thread to see if they could use that info to fix the reset issue. They found that it had the potential to hurt profiles. THAT's why it's not stickied. It's not been officially verified to be 100% correct.

So, checking that the file isn't corrupted before playing? Makes sense, but it's nothing I didn't already know. Besides, that takes quite a while to check every single time I want to play; I'd rather just use the back-up when I need it.

Its because they dont want to sticky a thread that points out a MAJOR PROBLEM with the game, a problem thats been there since Gears 2 like you said. Thats why they arent gonna sticky this thread either.

I figured not a lot of people would think to do it, and maybe as I said they can sticky this method. I'd like for there to be a permanent solution but until then all we can do is try to help people avoid being reset.

I keep a backup, and it's current. As I said though there have been reports that some of the steps in the backup and loading a backup process can actually be more harmful to your profile, so I made this to inform people that there is an alternative.

and yet, there is a sticky thread in the Issues forum ALL about rank resets. They acknowledge the problem. The solution we came up with is not 100% correct. That's why it's not a sticky.

This is a good idea. I tend to just play with my cloud save and use my HDD as the back up. Hopefully this helps people prevent from getting reset.

I understand. I was just kind of expecting you to have discovered a work-around solution that stops resets from occuring entirely. This just tells you whether or not your data is corrupted and so help you avoid losing your data because of resets. Still, this thread is helpful; I wish Thevius Sisko was still an active forumer so he could share this information in the big rank reset thread.

Agreed. After the massive problems that Gears 2 had with rank resets, it looks really bad for Epic's image that rank resets are, not only still present, but also much worse than before.

Besides, I have literally never heard of any cases of using back-ups causing further damage to player profiles. Yet Epic spend from October to March testing the back-up method and suddenly find this out? And then this helpful information that works around a problem in their game can't be shared because it's potentially harmful? Okay.

Actually, the info was found out a long time ago. They just never said anything until people kept badgering them to sticky the thread.

If the information was so significant, why was it not disclosed to us until absolutely necessary? That would've been much more helpful to everyone than witholding the information until they got tired of us whining, surely?
