OK I am frozen right now and nothing I try will get the console unfrozen. Any advice other than removing ethernet, pulling the power cable and then booting to view data in the xbox system?

I have read the thread here and have 2 questions:

*why is player data only addressed and not saved campaign too (as that matters towards medals etc too and is a much bigger file = more valuable data) and

*the game you need to play if you find your data is corrupted does it need to be online/offline?

I'm not that bothered about rank but I am bothered about medals, skins etc aka everything else!

Saved Campaign data only accounts for Achievement progression, not Medal Progression. As far as I know, you can lose your campaign data and still keep all Medals you've earned. (It's not like any of the campaign ones are hard to earn anyway.)

Online. Once your player data is deleted you have to load a new copy from the servers to make a good copy on your console. If you start offline you'll just make a level 1 save data.

Like I said, so far as I know (I'm not an expert), the two things affected by Campaign data are collectables and save points. Everything aside from those are stored in the Player Data as far as I know.

    Hello Gnashes,

Is my understanding of what I have to do now correct (Remove ethernet etc.. in previous post)? Is campaign data also on the servers do you know?
I may as well be prepared for what is to come.

Well one Onyx I'm working on is maintaining Max Multiplier in an Arcade Chapter so I'd assume this is saved campaign item. Also my saved Campaign is approx 2Mb whereas my player data is (was) as it should be <100kb. Not disagreeing with you just fyi about the Size of the Campaign save vs Player Data.

No idea on the campaign data my friend. I have no ides if it's on the servers or not, you'd have to ask someone else. All I can say is to delete your player data and restart Gears 3. I believe ALL medal progression is on the player data save. It should be 64-68KB. Campaign saves (I know) affect save points, chapters unlocked/completed, and collectables earned. Anything other than that and I'll be guessing.

Well as it happens my file size and icons indicate no data corruption so I have booted the game and everything seem to be in order. Pheeewwww. LOL also my Campaign Data is now 3Mb!

I may have missed the big picture here but if completely resetting means corrupt data player side over writes server side data, is it equally as useful to boot the game offline, and then if see you are definitely reset, then if so to dashboard and follow your steps in post #1? May be an alternative route as I've seen the file size paramaters have been questioned. Or at least maybe a second step for someone to take if they suspect their data is corrupt as in post #1 but want to double check before deleting the data?

Oh my head is so spinning from the stress I don't feel like playing now!

You could load your game offline and see if you're reset yes. But it's often just easier to delete the data and play online.

I think that other method is in the OP, not sure as it;s been a while since I've updated it.

So the game froze for me when i quit a horde game, tried to get the xbox menu up but nothing happend.
Pulled out the ethernet cord, ejected the disk and got back to dashboard where the xbox menu was on top, closed the menu and went to storage/gears 3 and saw a 40kb player data file.
Got a not so nice feeling in my stomach because i knew what had happend.
Started Gears offline and chose my primary storage and yes, there it was. A couple unlocks showed up on the lower right hand side while it loaded and then i got a nice white lvl 1 and a bunch of (!).

I keep a backup on my cloud but i only update it a couple of times a week so i felt sad that i would lose one or two days gaming.
Remembered this thred so i went here to check and after that i deleted my played data and started Gears online, once again chosing my primary storage.
Game loaded without those creepy unlock messages and thank you so much for this thred because all i lost was the last game i played (1 wave of horde).

Will still be keeping a backup just in case this method doesn't work. Though i hope to never have to go through this sh*t again. Game has frozen on me a few times before but i've been lucky until now.

So a USB is 'safer' than the built in HDD [not the 250 etc. that you plug in] or using Cloud Storage? Is that because you pull the USB out after using it and so it isn't connected to the Xbox?

Also, how big does the USB need to be? For some reason the Xbox wanted to format my 250 GB external HD down to 16 GB, so that plan fell through XD But will a regular 2 or 4 GB stick be enough for Gears 3?

This actually helped me one day. I thought my file may have been corrupted. I went to check it, it was less than 68kb. I deleted it and yay! No corruption!

Something weird happened to a friend last night. He gets on gears to play with me and 2 others, and he was still his rank, which was 75. Then we invited him to our lobby and he was rank 1. He tried all the steps here, but somehow when he got back on gears he was level 11. How in the heck did he end up as a level 11?

He needs to check his War Supporter Medal. You get 29 event ribbons automatically, which gives you enough XP to get to level 11.
