Hey Guys!
So, I never played the original Tribe games but this new free to play one seems very interesting. I was just curious if any UT players here have tried it and can comment on how the game play is.
Thank you!

I have not played it for 2 months now. But I can say that it was very fun. They have been constantly updating the game so I don't know how it plays in its current form. It is more noob friendly that the other tribes games. It still takes skill to kill people unlike other fps games where you walk around with machine guns and hold the LMB down. You have to master projectile weapons, they have slowly been taking the hit scan weapons out during the continuous updates. Tribes projectile weapons have inheritance, unlike UT3 projectile weapons. This means that when you are skiing around and fire a weapon sideways your projectile will not hit where you had your cross hairs. Rather it will hook in the direction you were traveling, more so if you are traveling extremely fast. This will be the hardest thing for a UT3 player to get used to, you will be frustrated at first. All and all I liked it mainly because of the movement (skiing). Much like UT3 it is very important that you move well in order to be successful.

I am one of those old school Tribes players who wished they had really started with Tribes 2 as a base and went from there like they said they were doing. The game is lacking a number of important things that made up the formula that worked for a decade, like the intricate sensor network and generator gameplay of old.
Still, I do recommend at least giving it a try. It is the best PC FPS we're likely to see this year. If Hi-Rez Studio can focus on adding more options to make the game scream "PC", fix the performance issues and bugs, and add more depth to the main game mode (CTF) it will be the best we have seen in a long time, maybe to the point to inspire other studios to revive their own PC FPS franchises.
Thank you guys! I think I'll be giving it a try seeing as how its the closest thing to UT out on the market currently and I hope to see some familiar names there as well. It'll make the transition smoother I think. I'll let you know how it goes, either on my site as a review or here to hopefully get some friends over for some CTF goodness.
off the record, i enjoy this game.
called ut3. in addtion to the one mentioned in the OP.
Worse than you thought, but better than you think.
I don't like it very much. Although its fantasy style (about time someone brought one out), its mainly based around skiing on the map and shooting people when they land.
It feels a bit gimmicky at times, but some people like that. Its free so worth a try.
I love it. I'm playing every day. It is very fast and takes some getting used to. Once you start getting better it gets very addicting.
Fl4k is my in game name.

Should give it a try someday and see what all this hype is about.![]()
A huge fan of the entire Unreal franchise and Bulletstorm.
UT2004 tips thread; UT3 tips thread; remastered UC weapon textures (UCBP for UT2004, still WIP), CTF-FacingWorlds99 (UT2004; final in the making); AS-Overlord (UT2004, Beta4); DM-Crane (UT2004, Beta1 - currently unavailable); CTF-BattleOnSlysBlockForts (UT2004, RC1, made on request); DM-Morbias (UT2004, new link tba);
S l y .
I never played a previous Tribes game (was playing other Unreal games regularly back then) but I did try out Tribes:Ascend as some guys in my clan play it competitively and said that if I was a UT fanboi then I'd probably like tribes too. I played it during the beta for around 8 hours and it was ok. I admittedly didn't get fully over the learning curve (it's a big one) but I wasnt a fan of the "skiing" or the gametypes they had so I've really not gone back to it. Also, i've always been a huge fan of the (real) BF series going back to 1942 so that game has held my attention even if I morally disagree with its publisher ><
I hated it and lasted about 30 minutes before uninstalling.
too vehicle oriented & too much keys (@ least too different from ...ut)for an old fart....i dont like the "Xgame" side (skying and so) but it s well done for thoses who like this kind of games
to me it s not a "pure" FPS

Tried it, been playing for hours. Flak, I added you to friends hope you don't mind. I love it. A lot. It's fast, it requires skill, movement is actually important, you can last a match without dying, teamwork is required, not a spamfest, it has CTF and Domination (under a different name) and DM, vehicles don't give you that much power and I don't really plan on using them. I love it. If anyone here is willing to play, my game name is Wunderbar007.
What a dom type game mode? I might have to check it out again. My in game name is SlightlySt00pid, with 2 zeros

Game is a huge hit already. That means a healthly playerbase.

Must be a manta there because we lost polish.
It's a great game. Hard as ****, though. Last time I played I ragequit hard 'cause some cheeky guy threw up a energy barrier right when I snatched the flag at 300km/h.![]()
I don't mind at all.
I'm playing mostly TDM. When I first started playing UT, I played all TDM/DM games. Then I played Sniper Arena. CTF didn't come until later. I didn't start playing VCTF until a few years into UT2K4, then I switched to TAM until UT3 came out. I guess I"m back to my roots.![]()
I do like CTF in Tribes and DOM is fun too, but TDM is definitely my fave.
Sorry to hear people installing it without giving it much of a chance. It just takes some time to learn. It's a lot faster than most games, but once you start getting good you'll really feel like you accomplished something. It's definitely not easy.

To be honest I'm in love with all of the 4 gametypes available. They all make you fight a little differently, especailly depending on what your class is. It's without a doubt the most fun I've had since UT3 was in its prime. Also Flak, if you like TDM, you should try some Arena. It's 5vs5 TDM.
Yes I like that too!! Did you play "Walled in" yet? That totally gives me a Quake/UT vibe.

How is the instal process? Can I pause downloading and resume later or do I need to plan a time to download it in one go?
Apparently Tribes Ascend is equipped with a pretty potent anti cheat. I was reading the forum to the Artificial Aiming site and noticed the members talking about it. One guy said this:
"It is my understanding that Hi-Rez has some form of anti-cheat programming written into the game. Thus far, and to my knowledge, no hacks have been able to bypass their cheat detection. What bothers me the most about this is the fact that, sooner or later (if not already), Hi-Rez will realize what they have accomplished. In an effort to make money as always; they will copyright, package, and distribute this anti-cheat software. If this happens, hacking seems as if it will become more difficult and, unfortunately for the consumer, more expensive."
Good.
Cheating is for little girls and those that just plain suck.
Are the cheaters really complaining the can't get away with it?
"If this happens, hacking seems as if it will become more difficult and, unfortunately for the consumer, more expensive." lol![]()
Lol, you should read the rest of what's on that forum. They're all in complete denial that they suck :/ and need an aimbot. I kind of feel bad for handicap people that use aimbots, but the rest of them...come on.
Anyway, I tried the game out tonight. Pretty cool stuff. I only played with 2 weapons the whole time, but pretty cool. It takes some getting use to as far as the "surfing."

This game is fantastic, Firstly I can't believe UE 3.5 runs on my laptop decently, secondly CTF reminds me of the UT days when it was first released many moons ago, the noobness of it all.
And thirdly,
SkippyDoe
Is my ingame name, feel free to add me and join in on some hot CTF action!

Hate this game. Just stupid. No wonder it's free.
It was better during beta testing when missing or broken features or gameplay mechanics were expected. Now it's just annoying.
Some friends and I paid to rent a server. A lot of the server settings don't work and half the time the server is not up and there is nothing we can do about it.![]()
What I don't like about it:
1. can't change cross-hair colors.
2. can't zoom in further with the phase rifle.
3. without the automatic pistol the sentinel class (sniper) sucks.
4. you can only carry two weapons at a time.
5. a lot of people have better weapons/armor/items etc. than you (paid via $ or exp. points).
6. if your jet pack runs out of gas you're dead.
7. it's not UT.
what I do like:
1. it's not a dead game - you can play when no one is playing UT.
2. the mechanics seem pretty good (Unreal Engine).
3. it's suppose to be difficult to hack now.
Cheating is for little girls and those that just plain suck.
Whats everyone playing as? Class, weapons, perks?
My Fav.
Soldier
Spinfusor
Eagle Pistol
AP Gernade
Perks
Enhanced damage radius on grenades
Ultra Capacitor II

I like the big guy with the anti-air gun (No idea the names of these classes or weapons)
I hardly pay attention to the load out, I'm still learning what every class does (Yes I paid the monies to unlock all the classes and get the 2x XP).
I'm still on the default perks.
Also the Infiltrator to go mess up generators.
"A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm"
I play with Soldier and Sentinel. I paid $10 so I could get the phase rifle. People come at you really fast in Tribes so it's hard to survive as a sniper...unless maybe you have the automatic pistol (which I don't). It's lame that you have classes in that game...just let me pick up the weapons I want...jeez.
Cheating is for little girls and those that just plain suck.
fun fact: scored a FLaG cap in my first online match of tribes:ascend
not so fun fact: haven't played tribes since it when full public.
Worse than you thought, but better than you think.
Tribes has always been class based, albeit we didn't need real life money to get upgrades.
They actually did a great job of keeping the old feel of the original tribes along with the great graphics of the UE3.5 engine.
I know of another company *cough* epic *cough* that could take an idea or two from Hi-Rez on how to remake a classic.
I like the class based idea, it forces the team(s) to try find balance within itself.
Still don't why there's a flag in TDM![]()

>.< don't like the process running in the background >.> I had to use titanium to freeze the app ^.*
You can disable the service and set its Startup Type to manual to prevent it from starting with your system in the Services console (services.msc). But yeah, it should not be there. People have caught it doing weird things like sending and/or receiving encrypted data to/from Twitter and consuming as much as 50 MBs of memory before the game or the launcher is executed with the auto-update unchecked in the launcher options.
^doubt that's "weird", probably planned and agreed to in their terms of service. If I ever install software that encrypts traffic to and from my machine to a third party, it's gone.
Tribes was uninstalled shorty after I installed it, so no matter.
I do, downloaded and played ctf for a couple hours tonight and it is a blast!! I love the skiing and trying to time where to shoot, very addictive game.
