Why people swap to the gnasher at spawn.

See a lot of people saying how "The gnasher is OP, that's why everyone swaps to it at spawn" and other various things along those lines.

While I can't speak for everyone (obviously..) I think it's safe to say a lot of people, like me, switch because it's safer.
If you're spawning, it means you're going to have to run across the map to get to wherever you're going. At any point in time, someone could run round a corner, or from behind you, and if you've got your rifle out, chances are you will die (unless you have the retro, in which case enjoy your free kill).
If you have the gnasher out, you can defend yourself and potentially win. You've a much higher chance of being forced into CQC when running across the map, so it makes sense to keep your gnasher out.

That is certainly one way to look at it. I always switch out my Gnasher at spawn as well. I simply dislike Gears of Rifles. I figure, if casuals see me using a Gnasher most of the time and getting a decent 1.5 or greater kill death or MVP, they will be encouraged to use the Gnasher as well. Who doesn't want to get a double or triple kill by wall bouncing and gibbing? Its sexy and addictive.

All tactics...but when you're running around the map, its pretty senseless to do that with your lancer out! I use the lancer as a somehow support weapon for myself. In other words: poke him with the lancer, finish him with the gnasher

I'm running into the middle of the map, so unless it's Rustlung or Sandbar where there's a great big open area in the middle of the map I always have a Gnasher out.

I'm not a fool enough to run around a corner in the middle of the map without something to defend myself in case someone's sitting there.

I use the Saw but I usually switch to that when the time is right.

Retro is all I need, I'm sick of the Lancer and Gnash for the time being.

I use to switch to the Gnasher for the same reasons as you though Maaaaaz.

I also do what OP suggests, unless it's the beginning of the round.In that case, I keep my RL out.It's mainly due to a habit gained during the Gears1 days.

Agreed with OP, i will do that a lot of the time, just to be safe, people cry and complain about this game and the weapons far too often.

If it's KoTH I will swap to my Gnasher. It's a CQC massacre. Sometimes if I run into an opponent that tries to rush me, I'll just leave my hamburgerburst out and melee them down.

Although like you said the Gnasher is a much a safer CQC weapon.

I switch to my Gnasher out of spawn because it's my primary. Use it do down them/drain their respawns, then, I pull the Lancer out for finishing the
job. (On TDM)
On Execution it's almost always a Gnasher fest so why not, right? (:

I wouldn't go so far as to call it useless, but it definitely works a lot better now.

Out of instinct from both previous GOW games. Isn't that the gun that made the game so fun to play and why we always went back for more.....also I think it's got to do with what map your on aswell i.e. gnasher at spawn on slab, raven down i.e or your rifle on larger more open maps like sandbar and thrashball depending on what area you push

That's true. In Gears 1 that is how every map was played. For me now I use whatever . It only takes a split second to change, plus you have spawn protection. No worries here. If it's beginning and I'm playing Gridlock I go to the tower, so as I'm running I have changed my weapon and then roll and it comes up. then I go to town up there.

If there is one thing that the Raven Down 24/7 playlist reminded me of it's the amazing feeling of everyone being on an even playing field. I wasn't dying because I couldn't get out of spawn or because I ran into someone with a superior weapon or because they threw a stun grenade at me. If I died it was because I got outplayed. The luck factor that now rules Gears of War was almost nonexistent in that playlist. I'm going to miss that.

because for me it is the only fun part of the gameplay, shooting each other from across the map while hiding in cover is boring, for that i would play one of several first person shooter

I agree with op 100% , I actually find it funny when anti gnasher pros talk down to ppl who switch to their gnasher at spawn. basically imo because they dont understand why. when u respawn n hit the ground running to whereever there is conflict or a hill cap etc. you will more than likely run into someone waiting around the corner or cqc ingeneral than you would run into a situation where u need your ar out. diff playstyles both viable tactics.

Depends on what map were playing or if it's the middle of the game or beginning but I do tend to switch to gashed for the reason you stated, unless it's koth or guardian when I use a retro for everyone that rushes

I let my team change to gnasher and I stay back using the lancer providing support like always, if we rush to control an area then I change to my S/O and go first

I think its funnier when people get an active reload right out of spawn at the start of a match as if it is going to last all the way until they encounter an enemy... just wasted bullets lol.
