Cool UDK working perfectly on Windows 8

You'll be pleased to know Epic and UDK community that UDK Feb 2012 build is working like a dream in Windows 8 on a fairly moderate PC..

    1 gig ATI graphics
    5 gig ram
    Quad core phenom chip
    64 bit OS Windows 8

I'm sure you guys at Epic already know this but I just thought I'd let you know that I'm testing it out myself and will post any errors or bug issues here !
Anyone else with similar issues regarding UDK and Windows 8 I urge to post your feedback here too

Windows 8 ? has it been released yet ? i know there is a previewer or tool for the virtual pc but how could epic make their engine compatible with Windows 8 that quickly ?

Its the other way around I think you'll find..
Microsoft making it compatible with everything...Unlike Apple when Lion was released, it was compatible with nothing!

The consumer preview has been released and its got nothing to do with virtual PC's....You can run it on one if you want!
This is the final pre-release from Microsoft and its totally free...Working much better than Windows 7 and just typical top class Microsoft software...
I've now installed all my Autodesk software on it and Photoshop ...Including UDK, I've not found any issues yet

It should work fine but bare in mind if you install it on a system with an OS already on it, it will overwrite that one and you can't then return to the previous OS..
Its best to install it on an empty hard drive and start fresh

Thanks for telling me i checked it in windows website it mentioned that so i don't think i will install it in case there is a bug and i can't fix it or in case my pc can't "bear" having it performance problem, i'm happy with my current OS, but thank you very much for telling me about the empty hard drive thing

No problem my friend, that's partly why I started this thread so that people thinking of using Windows 8 and UDK could read this and know what and if its feasible for them

i tried windows 8 on a 10 year old pc with a 12 year old hd, and it ran very nicely.
ony problem was it wouldnt recognise any of my hardware (wifi and things like that) and i couldnt get any software at all to work other than some dodgy apps that came with win8. installing my motherboard drivers completely broke windows 8.
seems like a complete rip off of android to me, not a bad thing really.

btw you can dual boot it and keep your old os just incase.

I haven't had a single driver problem with mine Tegleg. In fact its so clever that when there was a potential problem it automatically said it would search for one and found it in 20 seconds..........
I do have all my drivers on a disc anyway in case it couldn't find them...When I tried the ATI automatic update, that failed because ATI are are so dumb that they've configured their auto updater to look for windows 7 instead of looking for outdated drivers, so I manually installed an update

I've now made my own start button because Windows 8 doesn't have one and now I'm just making my power on/off button

More than stable, it kicks Windows 7's a** with speed...You just have to get used to no start button and the Metro UI

Have you got all the net framework set-up plus all your drivers. Its unusual for Max to crash too...I have Autodesk Ultimate creation suite working perfectly on Windows 8...If you try to install Nvidia or ATI graphics drivers direct from the manufacturer, you'll not be able to because they scan your system and say that OS is not recognised.Download the drivers manually..
If your drivers won't install under windows 8, choose compatibility by right clicking on the .exe and select windows 7 compatibility

Also, right click on the softwares .exe's and choose to run as administrator...You can select always run as admin and a little shield will appear on the short cut icon for any program

thanks for reply, i already did that but nothing, i have the drivers direct from nvidia, all the net frameworks (2.5,3.5 and 4), run as Admin and even the running under compatibility with windows 7.

I have no clue about how to fix it

There's a quick test you can run to eliminate a graphics card issue.
First is to open the control panel, its pinned to the Metro menu if you choose to show all apps.Second from the control panel choose, Display, then change display settings, then advanced settings, then properties, then driver, then driver details.......Check to see if your Nvidia driver is being used!..If it is, then disable it and choose another from the list that windows has.........Windows comes by default with about ten drivers and so you can try a process of elimination....... This may not solve it for you but it did for me because the current Radeon/ATI driver for windows 8 doesn't work..No surprises there knowing what a shoddy two bit company they are...

Most companies have been thinking laterally concerning windows 8 by updating their drivers asap, sadly, the graphics cards companies always lag behind even when there is no new OS to challenge.......They are in the game without too much competition from other developers and so slack on their obligations..

Before you do you might find some help here.
Post a detailed breakdown of your stats and any error logs that might have come with the crashes, Windows 8 forums
I'm pretty sure there's a simple fix for it but not having everything in front of me makes it impossible to cover every angle!

Your processor, is it a dual or quad core?
If its a single core that could be the reason!

Wouldn't say that. Most things work, but the new Metro UI is crash-happy. If you're just using the desktop though it's as stable as could be.

actually i really love the metro GUI, is very stable and nice, Win 8 for me, is 10 times more stable than Win 7, i been using it for near 3 months and i have nothing to regret. (well, just the 3Dmax and UDK problem, but i know that is a nvidia driver problem)

Is there anyway you could use an older Nvidia driver and maybe that might solve the problem.......Its a long shot but might just do it.
The reason I mention it because going back to my ATI card, I couldn't get Adobe after effects to work properly with the new graphics driver and so I used the one that came with original card that was on the disk and now After effects works perfectly...I'm not updating it now until I know the ATI have addressed the windows 8 compatibility issue

Ok, i think im close to solve this, i formated de computer, intalled udk first and worked perfectly. intalled office 2010 and Adobe Suite cs5.5 and udk failed again. So the problem is related to office or Adobe hmmmm.

Found it!! im using the plug in "FastPicture Viewer" to be able to see my TGA images directly from windows browser, that plug in make UDK and 3Dmax crash in windows 8, just install with troubleshoot compatibility and now works perfect!

I have run plenty of cooked and packaged games with Windows 8, but not May 2012 specifically! What was your problem?

I don't have Win8 so couldn't test it. The reason i'm asking is this is i'm developing my game on may 2012 version. But i guess it would work on win8 like the other versions work.

Why did you post the question in this Windows 8 thread then?
It would work in Windows XP even, providing you have all the service packs - and of course if you cooked and packaged it properly!
