Gears of War - The Movie: Snorkelbottoms Casting Call

This is a "wishlist" of whom the cast and other important members of a Gears of War movie should be.

For each cast/crew member mentioned I will state why I have chosen them. Carmine and Jace will be added as per the best/most favoured choice. Feel free to argue your own preferences for the roles, and let me know in the poll if you like the list...

P.S. Changes will be made dependent upon views expressed (ie Lester for Cole).

Main Cast
First off lets have the main gears themselves...

Marcus Fenix - Gerard Butler

He has the look, the gruffness, and can handle the action.

Dominic Santiago - Oded Fehr

Not an easy one this, but he has the look.

Augustus Cole - Lester Speight

I have been swayed on Lester, so here he is.

Damon Baird - Ryan Reynolds

Ryan has the humour, in spades, to play this part.

Supporting Actors
Now for the rest of the team...

Minh Young Kim - Jason Scott Lee

Again, he looks the part.

Michael Barrick - Michael Ironside

He looks the part and would bring some weight to the role.

Tai Kaliso - Dwayne Johnson

This was a hard one, but if he's up for a mid range role he would look the part.

Alicia Valera - Alice Braga

Another toughy, but I think it could work.

General Raam - Ian Whyte

He's more than tall enough and is used to wearing prosthetic make-up.

Anya Stroud - Yvonne Strahovski

She not only looks the part, but will be able to handle the action in a sequel

Colonel Victor Hoffman - Tommy Lee Jones

I know some would say R. Lee Ermey, but I think Tommy has the gravity for the role.

Private Anthony Carmine - This one I will leave to you...
It could be fun to pick one of the voice actors or one of the Epic staff.

Civilian Jace Stratton - This one I will leave to you also...
Remember, that if the film was good enough this actor would return as a COG

Crew
Now some of the people behind the scenes, whom I think would do the film justice...

Director - John McTeirnan
One word - "Predator". If John could make Predator a cult classic imagine what he could do with this.

Make-Up - Tom Savini
The Living Dead films are enough for me.

Music - Trent Reznor
because I'm a NIN fan.

Writer - Shane Black
He knows how to write action films (Lethal Weapon, Last Boy Scout), and he played Hawkins in Predator (and contributed to the script).

In terms of the story, keep it simple... Gears of War, with elements of RAAM's Shadow.

Good stuff snorkel.

Cool characters choices apart from Anya's. Someone better but I've no suggestions. The rest are great. Ironside for Barrick is perfect.

Nice choices. But I would still choose Lester over Terry just because he has he voice

Cole was essentially modeled after Lester so Lester should be Cole. Besides Cole is more of a Bulk muscle like Lester. Terry isnt bulky enough. everybody else is dead on.
Also back on the Cole topic, Terry couldnt ya know do Lester enough justice.

I always find it funny when "dream castings" show pictures of actors looking like a character in a single picture. MAYBE in his heyday John could play Marcus, but nowadays? You've lost it. You can't look at a character's look and decide, "Oh, he's great for the part!", because that's how you wind up with the Street Fighter movies- hollow castings based on simple ties to the character that have nothing to do with acting merit. You might as well have cast Hulk Hogan as Michael Barrick, 'cause hey, they have the handlebars, right?

The only casting I agree with here is Terry Crews. The dude's a legit actor and has shown he can be the psychotic murderer or the complete whackjob. I think if Gears were to take an even darker and grimmer route with the movie, then Crews would be the man.

The Dom choice is horrible as is the Cole choice.

I'd choose Franky G for Dom

and Lester Speight (voice of Cole) for Cole

Not a Travolta fan I take it... up until a few years ago I would have agreed with you but with films such as Face/Off, Swordfish and The Taking of Pelham 123 he has proved he can do the deeds. Strange how you like the mention of Terry when most people will call for Lester.

Terry's a significantly better actor than Lester, and has the credibility to back it up. And I love Travolta (huge Face/Off and Pulp Fiction fan), but I don't agree with casting him because you found a picture of him in a do-rag from twenty years and sixty pounds past his prime.

If you want an example of where acting comes first and looks would follow: Camilla Belle as Alicia Valera. She's a good actress, can easily pull off Alicia's mannerisms and attitude, and looks identical. Are there better actresses? Yeah, but if you want the mix of both, someone like Camilla is the way to go.

It's called acting for a reason. Heath Ledger wasn't a sociopathic anarchist with a fetish for wearing clown get-ups, but I'd say he pulled off The Joker pretty goddamned well. Tom Cruise wasn't around in the 1800s, nor is he a disgruntled war veteran, but he was amazing in The Last Samurai.

Heath Ledger I'll give you that one, but Cruise was much better in "Interview with the Vampire" IMO.

Lester has proven himself with multiple roles. He is a solid actor. Sure Terry has more of an action background and could easily be psychotic and stuff like in Gamer BUT he would NOT do Cole enough justice.

don't like most of the choices you made OP. Grant it many of them do resemble the actual characters quite a bit. Most of them do not have the voice or mannerisms to go with the character and that is huge IMO.

Also if the GOW movie does come to fruition i feel it would be best to use actors who are not well known. The reason for this is that when you use big names people will focus on that instead of the story or overall movie. A lot of people will judge movies based on their perception of the actor and previous movies they've seen them in and not the overall content of the movie. I find this hilarious because the other movies they're in are just roles! they're not actually like that. Plus most of them just act, they don't actually make the movies, though some do.

if they make the movie ....do it in CGI and use the voice actors from the games ...because Marcus is and always will be too me John Dimaggio...plus the things they can do with CGI these days are incredibile

Nice shout on Ironside for Barrick. I like some of the choices, but it's not all about how they look. Also, anyone suggesting anyone other than Lester for Cole is a fool. He is the Cole Train.

I think that it's unanimous, that once someone finds out that the voice actor of cole is lester speight, they just want him to play cole in any and every movie. lol.

I have made the following changes to the cast...

Marcus Fenix - Gerard Butler... Travolta may have the look, but wouldn't be up for most of the action.

Augustus Cole - Lester Speight... Lets face it Lester is Cole.

The problem with "Dream casts" are that they are always completely star-studded. I'm sure there are better actors out there for these roles than what Hollywood has.
