I've taken multiple college level UDK courses, and this was never mentioned in any of the layout or level design portions. That's too bad, really, because I suddenly see what many of the snippets of wiring or vines are for now..... (that and archtypes). The image really helped to clarify the technique, thanks for that!

The problem with spline loft actors is that they can't do collision (last I heard). Otherwise they'd be perfect for roads.

The only useful application for splines in UDK is for matinee where you can make the camera follow that line (which is not a very fancy feature). It cannot be used for roads because you want to create branches, intersections, etc, and that tool can't do it. So bottomline, I find it almost worthless, and probably that's why most of UDK users never heard of it.

I agree, in 3ds Max you have a whole host of uses with splines and spline lofting and that's what I originally thought the UDK version was....
After testing it last year I realised it was utterly useless!

Even if epic just made an option that let you convert a spline loft to a static mesh that would be enough, we could apply the collision stuff then (hint hint epic)

I have a rope I made in 3DS Max, it's pretty high poly. When I import in UDK, it looks fine, however, when I add it to a Spline Loft, it becomes flat.

The rope is at the top, the spline is directly below it. The rope is 16x1024. About 1728 poly. 96 segments and 18 sides.
