    Default Lag Switching?

This is happening more and more frequently.

Last night I was playing with a friend in Quick Match, and I was attempting a TDM clutch of 1v2. It was on Old Town. I was at beach spawn with the Scorcher, and they were coming directly through the Ink hallway. One of them walks around the corner twirling a smoke grenade, and he suddenly stops and just stands there. So I approach him at melee range and shoot him with the entire clip of the Scorcher, which is enough to down three people, but he still just stands there. So I reload, and start shooting him again, and still nothing. He doesn't scream, he doesn't catch on fire, nothing. His character doesn't even react. I melee him, but nothing happens there either. No stun, no flinch, just goes right through him, while he stands there, motionless. Then his teammate comes around the corner and one-shot-downs me with the Gnasher.

But... on my friend's screen, he said that I was the one that stopped moving and just stood there. I didn't even shoot the Scorcher on anyone else's screen. Just mine. So were they lag-switching? That can't be the case, because one of the enemies was playing, while the other was seemingly "lag-switching"...

I cannot think of any plausible explanation for this...

It seems like one player is lag-switching, but then I get killed by another player, who's actually playing... Is this a screw-up in the game mechanics? Or what?

There's been times where my screen freezes and when it comes too I see the red omen. I didn't think you could lag switch this game, I thought my WiFi went out or something. If I ever get in a match like that I usually just quit out and find another.

But my screen didn't freeze.... another character froze and became invulnerable, and I was killed by a player who was actually playing.... soooo wtf?

If everyone in the lobby except for one person was lagging then it's possible that it was a lag switch or... it could have been the host lagging. Seeing that everyone else in the lobby wasn't lagging with you, then the lag was more than likely caused by a spike in your internet's ping. There's also IP Flooding which attacks your internet solely, but I doubt someone would do that in a public/quick match.

Only ONE player wasn't affected, and that's the player that killed me...

Well, I pretty much summed up all of the possible explanations. It was either an unlikely but still possible lag switch, the host just lagging in general, or a drastic spike in your internet's ping. Based off the sound of it and from my own experiences, I'd say it was spike in your internet's ping.

I love how everyone these days is so quick to put the blame on someones internet rather than this broken POS beta (That's all it is with all these changes they feel they need to make). If someone has an IP sniffer and knows it's p2p rather than servers they certainly can lagswitch you and that's exactly what it sounds like happened. The other team spectating probably saw the OP running into a wall rather than actually trying to attack the person standing still.

Furthermore, what is the likelihood that a lag spike conveniently hits during a 2v1 when one is pretty well about to die? Slim. People will do anything to win in this game and protect their precious k/d ratio. Epic adding a leaderboard and stats like this ruined these games and opened the doors for people to cheat like crazy.

Fishman, I understand completely where you're coming from... I myself have played against such people who care that much to win. Based off odds though, all that I'm saying is that it's typically one's own internet that is the source of their in-game lag problem.

It can't be MY internet that's the source of the problem, when there was an enemy player who was playing perfectly fine at the time of the incident. One player can't totally lag invincibly, while another plays fine, and you say it's MY internet that causes this.

    No.

If that were the case it'd happen in Halo 3 when I play it or the CoD games I used to play. Gears of War are the only games I play that I lag like that. But even in those other games in laggy matches I was still able to kill people, even at close range. If there is a slight bit of lag it's playable, but most of the time my character skips when running, morphs back to a previous place I was in cover, rubberbands back into cover or when I jump over cover I will and super jump. Hell, one time on Thrashball I went to mantle kick a guy and was standing on his head for a few seconds. Everyone on both teams saw it... it was a WTFLOL moment for sure. We all LOL'd about it post game. Funny how all of a sudden everyone has a mic when something funny like that happens.

I know when it's me lagging that's causing the problems. For instance, I was playing a match on Azura. I went across the bridge and was going to go left to head up them steps to go towards Hammer/Mulcher. I hit cover on that corner before going around the corner and I saw Gnasher bullets come through the wall and kill me. When I die like that, I know it's me lagging. I know my connections pretty solid... Used to host matches on Gears 1 and no one complained of lag, hosted 10 man parties for private matches on Gears 2 and no one complained of lag and this was with people from Florida, Las Vegas, California, Michigan and Ohio. Of course there was that occasional moment where a shot that should have killed someone didn't, but that's happened in all 3 games rather it be local, LAN or online.

It must be like one in ten games then. Because I've jumped into several games where someone is operating seemingly lag free. So it's either only one person per game has a good internet connection, or p2p servers.

or you are just further away from the servers where you get put into a P2P match.

I play on Servers almost every game, whether it's Ranked or QM

This has happened to me often. Or I'll be in a match where everyone stops moving and I can run anywhere in the map and everyone is frozen in time.

You had a lag spike. It really looks like it. Only hosts can "lag switch" and because when others try to lag switch they end up just causing themselves to lag. When a host "lag switches" everyone gets the lag but the host. When in reverse the host just gets no data from that player, which causes what happened to you on everyone's screen.

Basically if you were host that situation would have been in reverse.

This isn't really the case here unfortunately. This looks like a "Why must people accuse others of cheating when they die" case. He needs to look into his own internet if everyone in the room saw him "doing nothing." He most likely had a lag spike.

The only way lag switching would be effective is if you are host which most likely you are not since the majority of games are played on servers.

Definitely sounds like a lag spike, its either yours or the host connection that's playing a game of keep up. Since the other two didn't have a problem most likely it was your connection. What is your download and upload speed, go to speed test and check your connection. Then used ping test to see the quality of your connection.

A lag spike doesn't mean your connection is on average crap. It means it decided to take a flying leap for that particular time.
