Best short fictions suggestions?

I have always wanted to play Metro 2033, though...

The new Metro game looks pretty interesting, I wasn't aware there was a first one or a book.

The game was basically a more "action" take on the book. There were other differences as well: In the game, Artyom meets a man called Bourban, who is helpful and aides Artyom through the metro, whereas in the book, Bourban is rather hostile, then later Artyom discovers Bourban was planning to kill him.

I was a little put off Metro 2033 because of how cryptic the requirements of getting the "good" ending were. Even though, as I said, the ending in the book is the sad, depressing ending in the game.
