Default A defense of HP stats in OG

A quick defense of OG in general: It's nice that we get that OG slot because it's the only way we can have a standardized and fair way of comparing our relative progress in god-king climbs and also to have a concrete sense of how difficult each batch of boss fights are going to be for any GK level. Getting to NG^3,000 and beyond is certainly a challenge in itself, but a very different kind of challenge because it's hard to measure relative difficulty in light of level inflation.

I am on rebirth 71 and have mediocre attack gems, but since I am level 81, I am capped with only 372 base stat points to spend. In this experiment, I traded 18,600 base HP (health points) for 372 base attack.

    Before the change:

    HP: 18,650 + 5,000 = 23,650

    Attack with Reaper: 1 + 1700 = 1701

    Attack with Gelder: 1 + 707 = 708

    After the change:

    HP: 50 + 5,000 = 5,050

    Attack with Reaper: 373 + 1700 = 2073

    Attack with Gelder: 373 + 707 = 1080

New gameplay experience: I can hardly sense the fact that I have more attack, yet playing against a plated guard I died the first time I got kicked in the head. If I was to keep these stats then I would have to restart battles MUCH more often.

    _____________
Conclusion: +373 attack is the most that anyone can get in OG from base stats. Considering that each base stat point gives 50 more HP while each point only gives 1 attack, then there is little need to put anything into attack at all. This is especially true since HP gems cap at 50 while attack and magic cap at 200. That means that until OG becomes so difficult that you cannot survive a hit no matter how much HP+ you have, then the opportunity cost of HP, whether in base stats or gems, is not worth it. The driving point of this conclusion is that in OG, the amount of attack stats that can be received from gems overshadows that which can be gained from base stats–this is far from the case with with HP.

Still, in NG+++s, those +1 attack increments eventually add up to thousands and suddenly overshadow the need for HP once you become very skilled at evasion. This point was also evident in IB1 where negative bloodlines were optimal with about 90% attack and 10% HP. The same was true for high NGs.

As a side note, you can see that heavy weapons are not universally overrated and have their niches in OG and early NGs (which have the added benefit of the Anarchax).

Spending points on magic is the worst economic decision you could possibly make since magic gems cap the highest. That means that base stats in magic have the highest opportunity cost (the cost of what you could be getting instead.) It makes sense early in the game before you get any gems, but since you're only able to change your stats a few times in your entire IB career before it gets too expensive, it's going to work against you to have more than just a few magic points in your base stats. And when facing things that can one-shot you, the ability to cure isn't going to aid in your survival.

And for where I'm at the 224 magic points in my Ring of Man provide more than enough magic regen speed. At some point I will have to replace them with HP gems and/or attack gems but that won't be until much further down the road.

Hey I have good news about stat reallocation. It only seems bad but after 1,000,000 it stays there. I just triple checked by changing them over and over and this is how it goes:

    100k > 250k > 500k > 1m > 1m > 1m > 1m ... etc

And after taking 15 tries to kill a plated guard that I would have crushed with high HP, I concede that it was more fun and realistic to die after one serious blow from a weapon. I was generally able to take 2-3 non-weapon strikes without dying. Once I get to an early NG++ hell I will probably put all my stats in attack just so that I can be trapped by the shade forever (I don't mind that.)

My happy endgame dream is being trapped on NG^2 as close to 81 as I can get. I'm going to try and beat NG+ without leveling up (probably end up about 83). I'm undecided as to what stats would make this enough fun, but I never intend to leave the garden. I will still have the castle for OG but in my NG++ garden I will eventually be able to afford the cheapest weapon for each class and a shield halo. I don't want any better weapons beyond that and would keep recycling through that area as a minigame. On the other hand I'd have OG to try and get to rebirths and GK levels that everyone says are impossible. Maybe they are but both paths seem fun to me.

    Grinding
through neverending NGs, on the other hand, doesn't appeal to me. I admire what Leandro and Voice are doing but I already logged on 2 1/2 solid years of grinding on a dumb online rpg that I don't even play anymore, and after that I decided that I was only going to play games that require real-life skill to progress and not digital xp. The paths that I described feel like they are more reliant on actual xp than digital xp. This game is an interesting balance, but otherwise my gaming passions are tetris and chess (where if your real-life skills slack your rating goes way down). Modern tetris is deeper than just about anything when it comes down to tactics, and I'm actually writing a book on it, but I'm trying not to go off on tangents related to that here.

Darth, say it shorter: in OG you need HP just for practice. Once you are master - all in attack!

Can you clarify smthg? I'm still in OG after only allowing myself to beat the GK once, really to see what everyone was talking abt in posts here. I immediately reset to RB1 in OG, and now in OG I die to the second Thane so I can get to the large key chest and max to level 81.......Question is if trying to beat a progressively higher level GK in OG, does that mean always going back to RB1 in OG? Might be a silly question, but I haven't dealt with NG/OG character slots.

The only stats that seem to do me any good at all are HP and magic. If it weren't for healing spells, I'd probably be unable to win the majority of my battles.

Just climb higher and higher GK, when you feel you are ready, and find your skills cap. If it's becoming too tough to enjoy, just go to rebirth 1 keeping all your stats and start this difficulty over
